Some interesting and fun facts about Wrestlemania

by Arjun Pal Student
There is perhaps no pro wrestling fan in the world who does not know what Wrestlemania is. In India, we can see it every year on Sony LIV. It is justifiably named the Grandest Stage of them All. Performing on the show is one dream that most pro wrestlers nurture. However, did you know that the name originally conceptualized for the yearly extravaganza by Vince McMahon Jr., the creator of the show, was The Colossal Tussle? It was the legendary Howard Finkel, a ring announcer who is also part of the WWE Hall of Fame, who coined the name Wrestlemania. The rest as they say is history.

Wrestlemania 35 was the first one to be headlined by women

Ever since its earlier days when it was known as WWF Wrestlemania, the show has always been headlined by the men. Wrestlemania 35 was the first time that women headlined the show. The final match on the evening was contested between Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch. Rousey is someone who put women’s MMA (mixed martial arts) on the map with her UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) exploits. Flair is arguably the greatest women’s wrestler ever. It was a triple threat match where the winner would go home with both the Raw Women’s Championship, held at that time by Rousey, and the Smackdown Women’s Championship, held by Flair at that time. In the end, Lynch defeated both her much-more-fancied opponents to take home the two belts.

Triple H has suffered the most losses at the Showcase of the Immortals

Triple H has been the World Champion in WWE for 14 times. It really does not get much more prolific than that. However, when you consider WWE Wrestlemania results he has lost 13 matches in the biggest event in the world of sports entertainment. This is a rather unsavoury record of losing the most matches in that event.

Run DMC is the first group to have performed at Wrestlemania

When you think of Wrestlemania music, most often it is the national anthem of the USA – America the Beautiful – that is sung at the event. However, during Wrestlemania 5 we saw the first time that an outside act performed something else. This honour went to Run DMC, an iconic group in American rap music. It performed the Wrestlemania rap. Ever since, we have seen many other musicians perform at the major event with the most prominent names being Flo Rida, Motorhead, and Sean P Diddy, to name a few.
