 If you're currently looking for someone to run your social media operations, you might be looking for some social media marketing services.

And if that's the case, pay close attention, because I've got five questions that you should ask before you sit down and decide.

First on our list, ask yourself: What are my social media objectives? In other words, what are you trying to achieve through your social efforts? If you don't know yet, there's no way that you can tell your vendor what you're looking for, and without them knowing what you want, you won't get your desired results.

Next step, ask how much time do you have to work on it? In other words, do you really need social media marketing services? How many hours in a day are you willing or able to commit to your social media program? If the answer is not many or not enough, then you know you may need to go find someone else to help you out.

Number three, and really importantly, what is the budget that you have and what is the cost of the social media services you're looking at? You need to figure out exactly what you're willing to spend and when you're ready to spend it. Then, you want to make sure that the services the vendor is offering suit your needs as closely as possible.

Number four -- and this goes right along with budget -- what exactly do you get for the service? You need to ask your vendor: Are you going to be creating content for us?

Are you going to be monitoring our page for any type of issues or customer service questions?

Are you going to be running our advertising? At the end of the day, you want to be able to identify what exactly you're getting when you hand them that check.

Last on our list: Do you go with a company, or do you go with a freelancer? By freelancer, I mean an individual who might be out on Craigslist or other freelancing sites, and by company,

I mean your eCommerce provider or an advertising agency. Although the right choice varies from case to case, remember that it really depends on how you answered the questions above and that you'll get what you pay for. So if you're tempted to hire a college student off Craigslist, just be aware that they may not have the level of expertise you need.

Keep these five questions in mind when you're on the hunt for social media marketing services.
