Recent studies have indicated that the unpaid publicity created by users about your brand, sometimes called "earned media", is what social media marketing is good at delivering. Word Of Mouth Promotion
A recent (2012) MarketForce survey found that 80% of people surveyed are likely to try new things based on friends' suggestions because of social media. That's a healthy indication that word-of-mouth promotion is enhanced by the presence of social networks.
That same survey question found that 74% of respondents are more likely to encourage friends to try new products.
The other side of the question indicated that 42% are likely to share negative experiences on social media, and 32% may be unlikely to buy certain products because of negative customer experience.
Consumers are telling us that they feel OK about interacting in the social media to recommend a brand, or to share bad experiences. The research tells us that customers are willing to act on what they see and hear from their friends and contacts.
If your brand is not part of this conversation you could be missing out on the good things that people say about you, or worse, you may not be aware of the messages being shared about that brand.
