So, what is a Luxury Car, Anyway?

by Fusion 360 Studios Digital Marketing Specialists

Undoubtedly, there is a definite line between luxury cars and standard, cheaper vehicles. But, these days, putting a definition on what luxury really means is quite a difficult task. You see, several automakers are stepping up their game to match top-of-the-line competitors, like Acura. What was once thought of as basic or middle class is more or less a blur in today’s auto market.

Back in the day, luxury was all about size, space, comfort and presence, says USA Today. In addition, price used to be a huge defining factor. Acura cars have a well-established, reliable reputation among consumers. But, lower-class competitors have some tricks up their sleeves.

Long gone are the days when consumers paid thousands of dollars for upgraded features like heated seats, leather interiors, keyless ignitions and navigation systems. Nowadays, standard models of mass-produced vehicles are able to put these upgrades in their vehicles at a reduced price. So, what does “luxury” mean for today’s buyers?

TIME Magazine reports that consumers like—and will—pay more money for fancy upgrades and features. Acura cars often come standard with high-end fix-ins, but Honda sedans are now sporting some of the same sophisticated features for just small additional fees. Thus, why would consumers continue to pay for the so-called exclusive nameplate?

It all comes down to the feel, the driving experience and the reputation of the brand. Longtime luxury automakers confirm that emotions still separate the high-class brands from the standard ones. Of course, every driver is different and their experiences are perceived uniquely, as well. So, depending on who you ask, you might receive different answers.

Due to the blurring lines of differentiation between luxury and basic vehicles, luxury car executives agreed that dealership experience and customer service play a major role in consumer behavior patterns. People tend to feel like they receive better treatment in certain environments. Luxury dealerships work hard at making sure their shoppers’ experience is nothing short of extraordinary.

When people buy Acura cars and other luxury models, they want to know they are being taken care of. In other words, their purchase should not be just a transaction; it should also be a relationship with the salesman which translates into a better driving experience. Needless to say, though, there are still unique luxury elements that mainstream brands do not have.

Aside from the consumer experience and brand reputation, luxury cars also have been known to outperform their cheaper competitors. They often have better handling and more powerful engines. Despite the upgraded features for a lower price, there will always be a definite line between luxury and basic.
