SLS free products: A must for healthy hair and skin

by Amili R. SEO
Have you ever analysed how many personal hygiene and body care products do you use? Toothpaste, shampoo, lotions, soap, liquid body and facial cleansers and so on. The list is continuously growing longer. But while using these products you might not have noticed that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a chemical lathering agent, is a common element found in all these daily use products.

In the recent past, the use of this chemical has come under scrutiny. Because of safety and potential toxicity issues the use of the chemical is being severely criticized.

Initially, SLS was introduced as an industrial strength detergent primarily used for heavy duty cleanser and degreasers. But to make quick bucks, corporate houses engaged in producing beauty and body care products started using it regularly.

Mixing this chemical in products which are in close and constant touch with human skin is quite hazardous for health and skin in particular.

Most of the companies have been taking advantage of a common myth which says that more lather a product produces, more it is useful as a cleanser. To get benefitted from this common belief, companies use this chemical in abundance as this is considered to be a cheap material.

The presence of SLS in a product irritates skin and it further compromises natural moisture balance. Losing moisture of skin and hair makes it drier. Not many know that whatever cleanliness the SLS mixed body care products provide can be matched by using gentler, skin and membrane friendly materials.

Several fatty acids can be used in body care products that work wonderfully well to cleanse the skin without disrupting the delicate acid mantle that protects it from all eternal elements and toxins.

Medically it is proven that with body care products SLS can enter easily the dermallayers and enter the blood stream as well.  There it destroys the lipid layers, which is required to keep the skin smooth and supple.

The SLS used body care products are produced by using many other chemicals as well. Unfortunately sls allows other chemicals to penetrate the skin and get deposited below the skin’s surface.

In the recent cases, it is also found that SLS has shown its presence in the tissues of the brain, liver, heart and other lifesaving organs.

Keeping that in mind, several baby shampoo manufacturers have promised that they will never use this chemical in their products as it is a great irritant to the eyes.

So why to endanger the sensitive body parts when ayurvedic soap can serve the same purpose. A bathing soap is frequently used in every house hold and if it is made of herbal products, your worry for SLS will never persist at all.

Go for herbal products as they are produced with natural ingredients and that will be a SLS free product as well.

Your safety is in your hands. Pick the best for your skin.
