Sleep Tight on a New Mattress

by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts Online

If you’re finding that you’re tossing and turning all night trying to get comfortable, it could mean that it’s time to buy a new mattress. Even if you have topped your bed with a comfy Australian wool underlay, if the mattress underneath is no longer providing the correct support, you may find yourself waking up with all kinds of aches and pains.

But how do you choose the best mattress? There are so many different types out there ranging from pocket sprung to memory foam. So, which one should you choose to go under your wool mattress topper?

Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Mattress

Even if your mattress isn’t showing signs of wear and tear, it’s usually recommended that you replace it every seven to eight years as it may not be giving you the support you need to get a good night’s sleep.

However, if your mattress is sagging in the middle or there are unexplained bumps or creaks, then you should buy a new one as soon as possible.

Know Your Mattress Types

There are several different mattress types on the market, but the four most popular choices are:

1.     Open-spring mattresses. The most common and most affordable type of mattress, these contain steel wire springs for support.

2.   Pocket-spring mattresses. Each spring is individually encased inside a fabric pocket. More supportive than open-spring mattresses as they mould to the shape of your body, they are usually filled with either wool or synthetic fibres.

3.       Latex. These mattresses help to distribute your weight evenly for complete support and are a good choice if you suffer from allergies. The thicker the latex the better the support.

4.       Memory foam mattresses. As the name suggests these mattresses mould themselves to your body. Many people prefer to use these mattresses with a wool underlay on top.

Firm, Medium or Soft?

You’ll find that sprung mattresses usually come in firm, medium or soft options. Generally speaking, the more you weigh, the firmer your mattress should be. Back pain can be caused by a mattress that’s either too soft or too hard, so the only way to ensure that your new mattress will be comfortable is to ……….

Try Before You Buy

To find the best mattress for you, you need to try them out. And that means paying a visit to your local bed store and lying down.

Don’t just hop on and off the bed, you need to be there for 10 minutes or more to really get a feel for how it would be when sleeping on it. You should also carry out the ‘hand test’ – if you can’t get your hand under the small of your back, the mattress is probably too soft, and if there’s a gap it’s probably too hard!

And don’t forget, if you share a bed with someone, you both need to try it out for size.

Invest in the Best

We spend almost a third of our life in bed, so it makes sense to invest in the best mattress you can afford. And don’t forget to add an Aussie wool topper for that extra level of comfort.
