For a student in the current era, they need to be successful in life and have a good skill in education. There have been many types of research regarding this topic and the World Economic Forum (WEF) has found out that there is a gap lying between skills the students learn and skill the students need.

As per WEF, every student must have a good combination of ‘Social and Emotional Learning’ (SEL) and traditional skill. This combination helps develop the ability to communicate, solving problems and collaborating with different people in different situations. Every student must have all these skills so that he/she can evolve with this digital economy with ease.

For the ease of students, WEF has already divided those required skills into three major areas as Competencies, Character qualities and Foundational literacy. Competencies refer to how a student must approach all the complex challenges in their life. Character qualities of a student refer to how a student must behave in their frequently changing environment.

The three major areas have many sub-sections; Foundational Literacy includes Numeracy, Literacy, Financial Literacy, Scientific Literacy, Cultural and Civic Literacy and Information & Communication Technology Literacy. Competencies include communication, creativity, collaboration and problem-solving. Character quality includes initiative, curiosity, adaptability, grit, leadership, and social & cultural awareness.

Now, why these skills are so needed to have? Well, as it is discussed earlier also that these skills are very crucial for the students to have in this present era. From many types of research, it has been seen that almost 65% of students who are currently entering their junior school are supposed to get a job that does not currently exist. They will get job based on their creativity, initiative to work, their ability to process and their adaptability power. SEL is developed in a way that they can help the students to get a job and deal with the different situations in their workplace.

Apart from the future help, these skills are also helpful for the students to cope up with every situation at present. When a survey was done with 270,000 different students involved in different age groups, 213 different studies are done with them form the kindergarten to high school. It was found that those students who receive SEL instruction from the beginning scored an average of 11 or more percentile points in comparison to them who did not receive any instructions or training under SEL. However, it is important for the teachers as well as for lecturers to involve some activities which support SEL rather than just following the traditional rule of soul-crushing lectures for the students. All the schools and colleges must take the initiative to come forward and contribute to the need for adding extra skillful techniques to help the students for the future.
