Significance of Hunger action month & how to be a part of it

by Akshaya Patra NGO in India - Akshaya Patra
Hunger Action Month is a 30-day campaign dedicated to coming together to fight hunger. September is the month where all people of the United States of America join hands with Feeding America to fight hunger. In India, September is celebrated as ‘POSHAN Maah’ where nutrition awareness programmes are held in schools, colleges, workspaces, etc. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an NGO that works towards providing nutrition to school children. Since the onset of the pandemic, it has also extended its beneficiaries to list low-income sections, marginalised populations and aged people. Donate to this organisation to take action during this Hunger Action Month.

Hunger crisis is prevalent since a long time ago. The pandemic has only worsened the existing inequities and disparities in our communities, villages, country, etc. To throw light on these differences between nutritional gaps, Hunger Action Month is celebrated in September. This is the month when people across various communities take a stand against hunger. Not just people, even various organisations (as a part of their CSR activities) and NGOs in India come together for one reason – to make Zero Hunger possible.

What is Hunger Action Month?
Hunger Action Month is a month-long campaign recognised by Feeding America and food banks, to raise awareness of hunger and promote ways to get involved to fight this crisis called Hunger.

This year, just like the last one, is a reminder to every one of us that when we stand united for the safety of our people – fellow citizens, house helpers, mechanics, carpenters, drivers, and people who come from socially challenging backgrounds, we can fight any calamity to bring our lives back to normal.

As a result of the pandemic, people who need of food assistance are on the rise. However, it is not right to blame the entire hunger crisis on the pandemic as it existed earlier too, but it only proliferated.

What action can you take on #HungerActionMonth?
Each year, it seems like the importance of Hunger Action Month increases rapidly. With all the countries still experiencing the effect of the lockdowns, every action you take throughout this month will have a lasting impact on the lives of the people who are in need. During this time, we must take a few actions like:

Donate online
Plenty of people need food or other essentials. As the pandemic has pushed incomes of daily wagers to a standstill point, it has led to a drastic reduction in the number of meals consumed by a marginalised family. Generous people have come forward to give food assistance with their donations. You can make online donations this month to help people by providing them with much-needed food.

Create fundraisers
When you feel that your donations are miniscule when compared to the number of people who require food assistance, you can opt to create fundraisers with certain NGOs that help you with your cause. Most of these organisations have platforms to help users and supporters create fundraising campaigns so that a larger beneficiary audience can be reached out.

Be a social advocate
The best way to make sure that everyone knows about Hunger Action Month is by creating awareness on social media platforms. Share posts about this September, spread information about the reasons for taking action during this month. Post informative videos, news about upcoming events, and help communities end hunger to achieve Zero Hunger.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a non-profit organisation that has constantly worked to eradicate hunger in school children by showing its commitment towards the cause of providing ‘unlimited food for education.’ However, since the first wave of the pandemic, it has concentrated all its efforts to help people who suffered the most during the pandemic – marginalised communities and low-income sections. With its various programmes, it provides essential groceries and freshly cooked food for the hungry.

Hunger continues to rise by various folds at a faster rate, and the situation has aggravated further since the onset of the pandemic. Thousands of families have to make difficult choices to make their ends meet. As we all continue to experience the impact of COVID-19 at varying degrees, a significant section of India’s population suffers in silence with empty stomachs
