Should You Have Surveillance In Your Business? Check Out These Tips!

by Elena T. Manager

It is such a controversial topic these days with privacy matters always looming in. However, using surveillance in your business can sometimes be a necessity due to common dangers lurking on your business as well as your employees ranging from physical to financial issues.

So, should you have surveillance in your business? Check out these reasons why we think you should!

Having surveillance in your business can…

1.       Improve Your Overall Business Operations

Co-owner of the Pepper Jack’s Neighborhood Grill, Ryan Elmore installed video surveillance at the restaurant a few years ago and said that the results were huge. With his business’ new surveillance, he discovered that the manager in charge was always ducking out of his responsibilities. Also, he discovered that his employees were giving away free meals to close friends and were also texting and taking multiple smoking breaks instead of working while he was gone.

In addition, he discovered that his restaurant was overstaffed. So, by clamping down the free meals, Elmore reduced the food cost by 3% and by adjusting the working schedules, he cut down the labor cost by 5 percent.

2.       Reduce Theft From The Inside and Out

Theft will continue to be a major issue in businesses. As a matter of fact, Matt Pillar, the editor and chief of the Integrated Solutions for Retailers website said that there could be as many as 275 million incidents of retailer theft in the world every year.

However, of those numbers, only approximately 1 in 46 arrests are ever made in connection with such thefts. What’s even more alarming is that around 1/6 of those arrested, about one million in total, are employees.

And of course, non-retail businesses also face issues of theft. This consist of everything from theft of intellectual property to physical company property which are all factors that any business owner must take into consideration.

3.       Stop Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

Despite laws that date back decades against the inhumane behavior, sexual harassment in the workplace continues to exist and damage employees.

And although around 7,500 reports and complaints were received by the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission in the year 2012, Huffington Post suggests that the number of incidences and issues are probably much higher.

Other than just being motivated by a concern for the wellbeing of your employees, you also need to be concerned about how sexual harassment in your company can affect its morale, financial status and productivity.

Using surveillance in the workplace can discourage this type of behavior from even starting if the employees realize that every move they make is being watched. If it can’t, then at the very least surveillance and hiring a private investigator can also help gather evidence when a sexual harassment complaint has been filed to help your company create a response.

4.       Boost Profits and Productivity

More data suggests that having surveillance on employees can actually help boost their productivity and company profits. For instance, Bloomberg suggests that electronic surveillance of employees lets a manager spend less time monitoring and more time to do something more productive.

Also, Bloomberg conducted a study on the effects of surveillance at 392 restaurants. Restaurants under surveillance not only showing a 22% drop in theft but also a 7% increase in profits. This study concluded that employees have edged up productivity due to surveillance.

5.       Reduce Incidents of Violence in the Workplace

Just like sexual harassment, violence in the workplace continues to be a constant problem in the United States. As a matter of fact, a report from SecurityInfoWatch.com revealed that almost 17% of fatal work injuries in the United States in the year 2011 were the result of violence in the workplace.

That is close to about 780 fatal work injuries annually. Installing surveillance in the workplace can help discourage such damaging acts and other incidents of violence in the workplace, vandalism and property damage before they happen. If not, at the very least, surveillance can help your company provide enough information and data to law enforcement after an incident has occurred.
