Should Deep Tissue Massage painful?

by Blair Nicole PR, Marketing
When you think of a massage, you don't think of a process that is painful or uncomfortable. On the contrary, you imagine a state of total relaxation and bliss, as your massage therapist works wonders relieving stress and tension. If you have ever gotten a deep tissue massage, you may ask yourself the question, "Is that supposed to be painful?"

What Does A Deep Tissue Massage Involve?

A deep tissue massage is a type of massage that breaks up scar tissue and muscle knots. The objective is to promote circulation, decrease pain, and reduce inflammation. The massage therapist uses slow, firm pressure to reach deeper muscles in the body. Rather than promoting relaxation, as a traditional massage does, a deep tissue massage is used to relieve stiffness, pain, and muscle tension.

Is A Deep Tissue Massage Beneficial?

You may wonder if a deep tissue massage is beneficial to muscle pain and stiffness. Deep tissue massages relieve stress, and stress does cause pain, muscle and body aches. Stress has been known to cause severe physical pain, which a deep tissue massage can relieve. Deep tissue massages provide an increased range of motion, promoting pain-free movement. It has also been shown to lower heart rate and blood pressure. Many other conditions can also be helped by a deep tissue massage, including the following:

• Fatigue
• Anxiety
• Headaches
• Fibromyalgia
• Arthritis

Is A Deep Tissue Massage Painful?

Since a deep tissue massage targets muscle deeper in the body, those considering getting the procedure may be wondering if it will hurt. While it can be uncomfortable, the benefits outweigh the pain factor. A less painful massage would not produce the same results that a deep tissue massage does.

A massage therapist, such as those at Matrix Massage Spa should be communicating with the client in order to see if the pressure is too much to handle. If it is, the client should not be afraid to speak up. The level of pressure can be adjusted to a level that is more tolerable. Although most people report feeling pain after the massage is over, it usually goes away within 24-48 hours. The pain should not be debilitating. During the massage, the therapist uses his or her knuckles, hands, elbows and forearms to provide pressure. Deep breathing and hydration can help reduce discomfort. Applying ice after the massage is also recommended. The short-term pain that a person feels from a deep tissue massage is necessary for the reduction of the chronic pain that is being treated.

Conclusion

A deep tissue massage is an appropriate treatment for those that have discomfort due to many different factors. While the massage can be uncomfortable, most people say it is worth the pain in order to relieve the symptoms of other health issues. While a deep tissue massage is highly effective in treating different conditions, there are many people that can handle the temporary discomfort and enjoy reaping the benefits.
