Sharepoint Setup Best Practices

by Telco ICT Group Telecommunications

SharePoint is now the most widely used platform in businesses and organizations around the globe. With this in mind, it is expected that SharePoint will encompass best practices from various departments in an organization. Thus, when a business decides to utilize SharePoint setup, it is necessary to abide by the best practices so as not to encounter problems later on. Below are the top four SharePoint setups best practices:

Organizations should determine what types of documents will be placed on the web pages. Web pages can contain many documents. If the organization only plans to put important business information into web pages, it would be best to segregate these into folders. It would be best if the folders can be viewed using a browser window or search engine. This is because users may not have all the time they need to read or search through all the documents within a folder. However, if documents are intended for readers who can instantly make their decisions based on the content, it would be good to allow them access to these documents.

Another best practice is to have a site map on the website. A site map is basically the map that is displayed on the top portion of the page. This is composed of columns that represent the pages located on the site and to the left side, there are the navigation links. When a site user clicks on any of the links, he will be directed to the next site map column.

The navigation hierarchy of the pages should follow a logical path. Site users can choose to go directly to the group, product, or project they are interested in. Site users should also have an option to go to the search box. Search boxes will provide them with an option to store and search for particular keywords. Users can choose to store or to search for multiple keywords.

Users should avoid using empty pages. Empty pages that have no contents will not be indexed by search engines. Empty pages should not be used for forms as well. It is recommended that you use a form for forms and submit the forms only after completing. When the user has finished filling out the form, he should submit the page.

These are some of the best practices that SharePoint developers can follow to make their websites more search engine friendly. You can follow these best practices even if you are just starting to develop websites. When your site is being developed, do not rely only on the crawler. Use your best practices and try to make your site as search engine friendly as possible. With the appropriate strategies, you will be able to achieve this goal.
