Sexology – Sexual problem and its treatment

by Vivan Hospital Sexologist

Sexual problems are very common in people however the treatment available for the same is not. People suffer from sexual problems but stay quiet because of the taboo associated to them. Sexual dysfunction is the inability to have a fulfilling sexual relationship. This definition varies from person to person and depends on personal interpretation of the word “satisfaction”. Sexual dysfunction can be vaginal dryness in women and erectile dysfunction in men, to low libido in either partner.

Sex is the most beautiful element of being human and an important aspect of a relationship, we share with our partners. Sexual activity is believed to produce happy hormones in our body. So when in stress, a couple should engage more in love-making rather than avoiding it. Also, a married couple of any age that share sexual moments frequently shown a higher level of bonding in their relationship. Whereas relationship therapists stated that the couple who doesn’t engage in sex that often goes through the phases of unhappiness, frustration, depression, rejection, self-doubt, difficulty in concentrating and low self-esteem

In spite of the fact that India is the home to many explicit sculptures like the ones in Khajuraho and Konark, sex continues to be a subject that is pushed under the carpet. We are bound by inhibitions and keep repressing our own sexuality, sexual needs and moreover, sexual problems.

Sexual problems are very common in the society more than we can think of. However, education and awareness related to the same is very limited. Most people and even educated ones fails to realize that the problems of rape, HIV/AIDS, unprotected sex, STDs etc. can be tackled by properly educating children on these topics. We live in an advanced world where technology has reached its zenith but when it comes to our own personal health we shy away from seeking expert advice a lot of them are uncomfortable about admitting that they even have a problem. When people don’t shy away from treatment of any other disease then why should the same happen with treatment of sexual problems. They are as important and integral part of well-being as the other arenas of human health.

One of the reasons may be that people are not aware of services or treatments that are provided in this field. Sexual problems are so common in the society today however there are very few specialists who have deep information about the cure to such problems. Even those who are ready to deal with the problems in their sexual life do not have awareness regarding whom should they speak about it. In such situation the only people they can speak to is their general physicians.

This is so because people are not aware that they can go to an expert, a sexologist and take his expert advice. A sexologist will talk about your concerns about sexual functioning, such as problems with arousal, orgasm, and painful sex, basic sex education, addressing sexual trauma, differences in desire among couples, changes in desire or libido.

Both men and women need to understand that seeking help regarding sexual health is not a crime. Most bedroom problems can be solved inside a therapist’s office. People should come out in the open about their problems and understand that an expert, a sexologist, can help them getting rid of the same.
