See The Difference Between a High Street Dress and A Vintage Style Swing Dress

by Louise Thomas Writer

Fifties dresses such as the swing dress is a style of dress that became popular in the 1940s and 1950s when many ladies used to go out dancing and needed something that protected their modesty while allowing them to move freely. This dress is fitted at the top to the waist and then swirls out into a full skirt that allows the lady who is wearing it to express herself more freely on the dance floor and flash a bit of leg as well if she so wanted to. These days the swing dress is very similar in style to what it was back then, and is used for a similar reason to make a great impression on a night out or at a party as well!

Swing dresses are obviously vintage in origin but have been developed over time to fit the changing tastes of fashion orientated women today. When the swing dress was first made popular back in the 1940s, the Second World War meant that rationing was in place, and so there wasn't much material available for the skirt. However, once the War was over in the 1950s, the supply of cloth became more plentiful, and so the Swing Dress developed into the fuller skirted style that we know so well today. The result of this excess use of fabric in the skirt area means that the skirt moves with the wearer as she dances, and swirls around her body in a beautifully feminine way that is lovely to watch.

In the 1940s when the swing dress first became popular, girls used to pair them with seamed stockings and heeled shoes. However, in the 1950s, they were adopted by a slightly younger generation, who preferred to pair them with short socks and white lace-ups.
