The largest of all the Greek Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is also the most important among the island group and is well-known for its interesting history. The island has been nicknamed 'The Island of the Knights', derived from the name of a Catholic military order called the 'Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem' that ruled the island between the early 14th and early 16th centuries. If you're a history buff, you'll enjoy your time spent on this island. The island also has some enchanting beaches and wooded valleys that offer the right environs to unwind and spend some time away from the hustle-bustle of crowds.

Your Rhodes holidays would give you the chance to explore some of the popular attractions located in this part of the world. Among them is the Palace of the Grand Masters, which is located at the top of the Street of the Knights and was built by the Knights of Saint John. It sits at the Old Town's highest point. After the departure of the knights, this palace fell into a state of decline. However, it was rebuilt in the early 20th century by the Italians. It even served as a holiday residence for King Emmanuel III and Benito Mussolini. The palace has over 150 rooms, of which, only about 20 have been opened for the visitors.

From this palace, you can take a walk around the medieval fortifications built initially during the times of the Byzantine rule and extended and reinforced between the 14th and 16th centuries by the knights owing to the fear of attacks from enemies. They are considered one of the world's finest examples of medieval fortifications. They extend to 4 kilometres and include a dry moat, imposing towers, artillery firing posts, magnificent gates, and sturdy bastions.

While holidaying on this Greek island, do not miss the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. It is yet another interesting attraction you can explore while in this part of Greece. The museum located in an old building formerly called the 'Hospital of the Knights'. The building was constructed by the Knights of Saint John as a hospital during the 15th century, which tended to the sick and the poor. You can browse through many archaeological artefacts in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. These artefacts were brought from different parts of Rhodes and the neighbouring islands.

During your time spent in Rhodes, you'll also get to explore its majestic beaches. One of them is the Windy Beach, located at the western end of Rhodes town. The name of this beach refers to its windy atmosphere, which can keep you cool even during the hottest months of summer. Elli Beach is the most popular among the beaches of the town and extends from the Cape to Mandraki harbour. It is an excellent mix of gravel and sand. Tsambika Beach is also a favourite among many tourists owing to its serenity and pristine surroundings. You can also rent jet-skis and paddle boats if you are feeling quite bored of sunbathing. An old monastery located close to this beach is also worth exploring.
