Return Of The Lederhosen

by Daniel D'souza german-lederhosen
There was a time when traditional German costumes such as Lederhosen for men and dirndl dress for women were extensively used in and around Germany and Austria. However with the passage of time their popularity declined and they were relegated as the choice of the conservative class. One of the reasons was that the costumes were considered to be ideal for the working class and the upper class people did not like to use them. For sometimes they remained in the background as occasional festive wear in occasions like the Oktoberfest.

Fashion World Recognizes Potential of Lederhosen and Dirndl

Of late however the German lederhosen as well as the dirndl dresses are catching the imagination of the fashion lovers across the globe as the fashion world has started recognizing these folk festival costumes as one of the best fashion statement providers. Thus dirndl as well as lederhosen has staged a virtual comeback in the apparel market as fashionable items now. They are now marking their appearance in various fashion shows as well as in the rural festivals alike. Both men and women are getting attracted to the fashion statement offered by these traditional Bavarian folk costumes. However besides being fashionable these costumes are also ideal for outdoor works and continue to be popular in the industry.

Wearing the Costumes is Common Feature Now

In recent times wearing lederhosen has become common in rural sectors in Germany. It has become integral part of the life of people working outdoors most of the times. This has also put an impact on the visitors and travelers arriving in the area from different parts of the globe and the popularity of the Bavarian costume are growing consistently. Also in recent times the use of the costume in urban areas including Munich and Vienna and this trend has added to the growing popularity of German lederhosen. Only difference is that in rural surroundings the costume is popular because of its practical use and value whereas in the urban areas the costume constitutes fashion statement for the users. In both cases people are using the costume extensively and it has marked the comeback of the costume in the consumer circles once again.

Change in Concept giving Rise to Popularity

In the past these costumes were associated with ultra-conservative attitude. At the time when the Nazis ruled Germany these costumes were prohibited for the Jews and particularly the dirndl was considered as a sign of not being open to the world. But of late the concept has changed making these costumes ideal for fashion mongers and that has given the popularity of dirndl and lederhosen a positive boost. Change of concept is also due to the preference of modern generation in mixing classic with contemporary styles.

That is why one finds chain of dirndl and German lederhosen shops in market with many of them offering huge discounts and incentives as the market is growing more competitive with the passage of time. Due to growing popularity of the traditional folk costumes the retailers are also registering big profits.
