Retirement Home On Wheels: The Grey Nomad Dream
by Neville Dinning Grey Nomad Working OnlineTo Tow or Not To Tow? The BIG Question.
When people retire from the workforce and have time to themselves because they are no longer tied to the regular commitments of a job and work, there are many ways to react to that change. The daily grind, week after week, of heading off to work leaves little time for relaxation. When chances to relax do arrive they usually have to be crammed into short periods, and then it's back to the grind.
Retirement for some people means that they can extend that period of relaxation after work over a much longer time. Even for several years.

On option is to take their home on the road, and travel around their own country, or venture to other parts of the world. When t comes to mobile homes there are several options and retirees in different parts if the world reflect the preferences of other RVers in their part of the world. It is however, not an option for everyone, and there are choices to be made about how to achieve that dream.
In many parts of the world RVers have tended to opt for Motorhomes, while down under, in Australia, the caravan (or trailer as our North American friends might call them) is the favoured Grey Nomad home on wheels. But as Grey Nomads begin to age, the bother of hitching and towing might encourage them to switch to Motorhomes.
In the end the choice is going to come down to personal preference, based on factors such as those below.
- Fuel economy: caravans with a largish tow vehicle tend to use more fuel than a moderately sized motorhome.
- Size of vehicle: Once you unhitch the caravan the vehicle you drive around in likely to be smaller.
- Towing requires a particular skill-set: Many domestic disputes have been sparked while trying to reverse into that small parking spot.
- Setting-Up Time: Hitching and unhitching a caravan often delays the that well-deserved cuppa while in the motorhome you just put the kettle on and then you relax.
- Convenience: With a motorhome, everything you need is right there when you need it. You mighty have to head back to caravan if the weather turns cold and you need that jacket, while in the motorhome it's just a matter of opening the wardrobe and there it is.
- Long Stay: Here's where the caravan really shines. Once you set up your RV, you have a commuter vehicle to go exploring, and it can go some places a motorhome would struggle with.
When the calculations are done there may not be much difference in the money to outlay to set up the RV, and the choice is going to depend on personal preference and the list of practical things that suit you.
