Dharamshala, a beautiful hill town whose name literally translates to "an inn attached to a temple", is simply a tranquil and relaxing place to unwind. Located in the beautiful regions of the state of Himachal Pradesh, it is one of the most popular hill stations in the nation. Especially, in recent past few decades, the popularity of the hill town went way up, and it is because that the town is now the home to Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in Exile. To state the fact, the town's ties with the Buddhism dates to the time way-old, the 8th Century. However, it is interesting that most of the population in the town are Hindus. Today, Dharamshala is a popular hill station that is known for its political, religious, and tourism significance. Today, the town is often flocked up-to-the-neck by the tourists and Buddhist students. The town, especially the markets areas are no longer quite. All the actions in the town can be found in the Upper Dharamshala, which is where the Tibetan community and the exiled Tibetan Government reside. This part of the town is also called McLeod Ganj, after Sir Donald Friell McLeod, the former British Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab.


The other major part of the town is the Lower Dharamshala. Unlike the Upper Dharamshala, the Lower Dharamshala is quite and is the seat of administration, education, hospitals, and commerce. However, there are not much in this part of the town to explore, and the Upper Dharamshala remains the dominant attraction of the town. In addition, there are a couple of other interesting places in the vicinity of the centre of the town. Located 2 Km to the north-east of the town is Bhagsu. It is a small bustling town, replete of restaurants, shops, and public places. Another interesting place in the town is Dharamkot which is 3.5 km from McLeod Ganj and is set on top of a hill. It is an ideal place for the sightseers and those who like some outdoor actions.


The Gaggal Airport near Kangra is the nearest airport to the town.
