Relax and unwind the best way at Valiyaparamba Backwaters

by Shruti Sharma Content Curator

India is a land of many different natural features, each rivalling with the other in beauty and serenity. If long sandy beaches, exquisite sunsets, and verdant greenery are what you have been looking for in your next vacation destination, it is time you book your tickets to God’s Own Country - Kerala. There is indeed a reason this state is on the bucket list of most travel enthusiasts. The beaches and the backwaters apart, the rich culture and decadent cuisine of Kerala, the historic monuments and temples add to the mystique of this land. One of the best experiences that visitors attest to is a stay in the houseboats on Kerala’s backwaters.

Valiyaparamba Backwaters

Valiyaparamba is roughly an hour's drive from Bekal, one of the best-loved tourist destinations in the state of Kerala. This quaint little backwater destination in the district of Kasaragod is an island that offers visitors seclusion in the midst of breath-taking natural beauty - something many of us living in urban communities cannot manage to find easily. Dark green foliage, swaying coconut and palm groves, and the backwaters fed by four rivers of the region make this place a truly stunning but hidden jewel. The tranquillity and serenity of Valiyaparamba make it a great picnic spot for couples and families too.

While you may really want to spend an entire day exploring the island and resting in the shadows of the coconut trees, drinking in the beauty of the water inlets, there is yet another experience that Valiyaparamba is known for – a stay on the Kettuvallams or the houseboats. You may choose to steer these yourself or enlist some local help. You can enjoy your time fishing and cooking your catch on these houseboats. Most of these are done up quite comfortably and the experience of navigating the backwaters in one of these boats is nothing short of divine.

Bekal

Apart from the fact that Valiyaparamba offers the best natural views and a calm day away from the hustle and bustle of life as we know it, there is other major advantage that you may want to consider. The proximity to Bekal (19 kilometres from Valiyaparamba), home to some of the most luxurious Kasaragod resorts, is a definite attraction. The LaLiT Resort & Spa Bekal, for example, offers plush accommodation combined with a rejuvenating ayurvedic spa experience.

Bekal is also known for its historic fort. This fort gained prominence when it was featured in the Tu Hi Re song from blockbuster Bollywood movie Bombay. The nearby Ananthapura Lake Temple is the perfect place to experience the magic of Mohiniyattam, Kathakali and Theyyam performances on festive days. This is the greatest attraction of Kerala.

Not only is Bekal home to the best hotels in Kerala, it is also the seat of coastal cuisine at its very best. The Nombilli and other local restaurants dish out the very best of southern food, fragrant with fresh, locally grown spices and the ubiquitous sweet coconuts of this region. Bekal restaurants serve up the best of seafood, cooking with age-old methods.

Valiyaparamba and Bekal have something to offer everyone. From the young and adventurous to those looking for peace and joy, from solo travellers to honeymooners, from families looking to spend some quality time together to culture enthusiasts – this is the perfect destination for every traveller.
