When it comes to the unresolved matters of your family like divorce, child custody, spousal support or domestic violence, then you need the aid of a skilled and experienced family law attorney.

However, you need to be very careful, whom you want to hire as a family lawyer as you will be sharing a lot of personal information and details with the lawyer and thus it is important that you have trust on the lawyer and are on the same page.

In order to find out whether, the family lawyer is ideal for your case, there are some questions that you must ask the lawyer, before you hire them.

For how long you have practiced family law?
OK, so this is the most important question that you must ask the lawyer in your very first meeting. When you are considering the lawyer to handle your case, it is important that they should have the experienced and have fought cases similar to yours in order to streamline your case.

A lawyer, who is not experienced in family law and have never practiced it before, will not understand the loopholes in the law and there are huge chances that you may even lose the case.

How many cases you have handled similar to mine?
It is important to specifically ask the lawyer that how many cases, they have handled similar to yours with exact circumstances. A attorney may have handled many cases, but it is important to make sure that whether the situations of that cases were similar to yours.  Also make sure to ask that how many cases they have handled in a trail-especially if your case is contentious or say if the opposing party in your case is adversarial.

How long do you take to attend calls or respond to emails?
When you are hiring a family law attorney, you are paying them for their time and thus it is important to make sure that they are available when you call or have emailed.  It is important to be aware of the time that they take to return calls. It is best to understand the attorney’s policy before your case progresses.

You don’t want any misunderstandings later on.

Will you represent me?
Many times it so happens that the lawyer that meets you, assigns your case to their associate. It is no big deal!  Many lawyers have team when working on a complicated case. So, you never know! Better ask the lawyer beforehand that whether they will personally represent you and will their associate do it for you.

It is beneficial as a team as a whole will look after your case and will be immediately response to your demands. However, if the lawyer decides to involve other professionals along, then be sure to inquire how experienced the professionals are, how much they cost, what they will provide and how familiar your lawyer is with their work.
