Powder coating problems and solutions - Helping Guide for Beginners

Because of the lack of basics powder coating knowledge polymerization process. its pretreatment phosphating chemicals process, posts pretreatment phosphating process and its storage. Here I am trying to discuss some basic points for improving powder coating life. and saving metal life. There are a few points we are going to discuss, these points are as follows.

1.Small Peeling off Problems.

2.Big Peeling off Problems.

3.Craters Problems.

4.Pinholes problems.

Let's discuss all these basic problems in details.

1.Small Peeling of Problems :

Problem because in this problem powder peels off from the small part of the surface. like joints, bends, during installation. The causes of these problems are poor pretreatment process or poor phosphating process. Noted that the presence of oil particles on the surface before powder coating. Causes major problems in powder coating finish. Properly inspect your pretreatment process during oil removing or degreasing. Metal should be properly protected with any of the possible corrosion resistance layer. Viz. Zinc Phosphate, Tri Cationic Phosphate, Iron Phosphate or 3 IN 1 Phosphating Chemical. Giving Extra focus on the cleaning & phosphate coating will overcome small. Peeling off problems.

2.Big Peeling off Problems:

When powder coating layer come out from metal surface very easily. From major part then. we consider it as Big Peeling off Problem. This problem arises mostly due to poor backing powder coating. Most of the powder coatings required 180 to 200 degree Celsius metal temperature. For 10 to 15 minutes for proper backing. But if there any change in the parameters of metal temperature. or timing or both can cause poor powder coating backing. so for rid of these problems in your process. keep your backing oven calibrated. and share time to time knowledge with your operators. For right temperature and timing for your kind of powder consult your supplier.

3.Craters Problems:

Craters are the bowl-shaped cavity . over the powder coating surface. This problem comes when metal surface contains high quantity oil particles. Again this is a pretreatment problem. Choose a good quality product and services.

4.Pin Holes Problems:

when powder coating surface is uneven. By small pin like spikes, we call it pinholes problems. This problem comes when metal surface contains moisture. To avoid this problem the metal component should be dry and moisture-free completely. Sometimes moisture also comes from other sources like with air. when powder comes out from electrostatic gun with air pressure. That air pressure sometimes contains moisture which caused pin holes on the surface. In some cases dust particles stick on metal surface. These dust particles do not melt during the polymerization process. Which form pinholes after painting? To avoid this problem. Clean your paint shop dust free. Make your metal surface dust-free before powder coating.
