Potato Peeler- The Safe and Easy Way to Peel Potatoes

by Jhon Smith Web Analyst

Potatoes have been in existence for a long time now. So too have been potato peelers. While a lot of people still use the common knife for peeling potatoes, potato peelers have also been in existence for a very long time now. They have made life easy for many a homemaker around the world. Easy and safe to use, they can be counted among the most used type of equipment in a kitchen.

While potato peeling machines are available, the manually operated potato peelers still continue to be the favorite, for the ease of operation that they offer and for the fact that some of the models can also double up as onion peelers. There are various types of peelers doing the rounds these days.  One of the most commonly used types is the ‘y-peeler’. This type of peeler looks almost the same as a razor and is extensively used in many countries. The Australian type looks just like any other ordinary knife. You can also find the French ‘econome’ design peelers which come with a unique blade design consisting of two slits.

In many places a mechanical apple peeler is also used for peeling of potatoes. These crank operated devices can cut an apple or a potato into a helical shape. They can also be used as an onion peeler. They are also useful for cutting other fruits and vegetables including, carrots, cucumbers, pears and beetroot too.

The most widely used are the straight and the y-shaped peelers. Both of them can be operated with ease. It is advised that right handed people need to use them with their left hand and vice- versa. Whenever you are using an onion peeler or a potato peeler, make sure that your hands are pushing the peeler in a direction opposite to your body. This will ensure that you don’t end up accidentally cutting your fingers.

The best direction to start peeling, whether it is for onions schiller or for potato wafers, is to start from the center of the top. This will help you hold one side of the fruit firmly, while you carry on the peeling operation on the other side. This will also help you avoid accidental cuts too.

These days Onion Peeler is also being extensively used, particularly in commercial settings such as hotels and restaurants. In a restaurant setting, the potatoes are first subjected to treatment using steam jets. This loosens the surface skin, which makes the work of the peeling machine a lot simpler. There is another technology too that is available nowadays, known as the ‘magna scrubber’. This machine consists of rollers with rubber studs. The potatoes or beets or tomatoes are tumbled on the rollers. This process helps remove the skin of the fruit or vegetable.
