Planning to Design a Wine Cellar? 4 Basic Principles You Need to Keep in Mind

by Rudy Ardon Wine Cellars of Houston

When you are planning a wine cellar in your home, it surely has two aims. On one hand, you want to enhance the style, sophistication, and value of your place by adding this immensely luxurious feature. On the other, you are planning to store some rare vintage in your collection in the best condition possible. For the first purpose, an architect will be surely able to help you. But for the second part, you definitely need some expert tips.

When you are appointing the designers of Houston wine cellars, it is necessary that you get the basic ideas of having a cellar at home. Take a look at the following points to know more.

Keep the Temperature in Control
The main qualities of the wine are the aroma and flavor. And these two things depend on the place where the wine is stored and the temperature of it. When you are storing the wine, it is obvious that you will also need to get the cooling system installed in home wine cellars. Now, storing a bottle of vintage wine in cool place is not the same as storing any other beverage. The wine ages and that enhances its aroma and flavor. So, if the place is too warm, it will result in the wine getting cooked and that means the aroma and flavor will be flat and undesirable. So, you have to make sure that you keep the temperature of the cellar ideal, between 45 degrees Fahrenheit to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, 55 degrees Fahrenheit is often cited to be the ideal temperature. No matter what, it should not ever go above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, don’t let the temperature go down as it will make the place dry which will dry out the corks too. This way air can sip in the bottle spoiling the wine.

Keep Away from Too Much Light

When you are storing wine, don’t expose it to bright light or sunlight. UV rays can degrade the quality of the wine by making it age faster. This is the reason why colored glass is used for the bottles. Go for incandescent lights for your cellars as it will emit minimum UV rays when you switch on the light of the cellar. Make sure you are keeping the lights off mostly. This is the reason why underground Houston or Lake Jackson Tx Wine Cellars used to be so ideal for storing wine.

Don’t Sweat it Off
Just like the temperature, the humidity within the cellar should be ideal too. It should be between 50% to 70%. With extreme humidity, it will cause molding. With less, it will dry out the cork which will result in getting air sipped in the bottle. You surely don’t want any of these. If you are living in a dry area, placing a pan of water in the cellar can help you.

Control Vibration
Wine aging is actually the process of slow chemical reaction which enhances the taste and smell. If the place where the wine is stored receives vibration, it will make the chemical reactions faster. It can also disturb the sediment by unsettling the old wine.

So, now as you know about these basics, what are you waiting for? Choose the right designer and get your dream cellar installed at home.
