Personal Training For Functional Training

by Neighborhood Trainers Finding a trainer is a personal choice

Think of jumping into the air. What do you have to do to jump? It takes a lot more than you think. In the first place, there is the thought, ‘I am going to jump into the air’. Then your brain sends a message throughout the body to get you ready to jump.

From this point, all of your individual systems kick in; your nervous system preparing the movement, your cardiovascular system sending oxygen through the body, your respiratory system taking in a gulp of air and of course the musculoskeletal systems actually getting you off the ground. This all takes place in a fraction of a second. It is really amazing when you think about it.

Functional training is all about helping you do what you do anyway, but doing it better. You can look at it either as the natural child of physiotherapy or as its grown-up cousin where something is taken to the next level.

A White Plains personal trainer will tell you that the key to keeping well later in life is to keep doing what you do. If you want to be able to walk distances in your eighties then you better make a habit of doing it in your thirties.

One of the key values a New York personal trainer stresses is performing an exercise is good, but performing it properly is so much better. That’s why they spend so much time teaching you form on the equipment. That way you’re really exercising properly and getting the best value from what you are doing.

When it comes to functional training, think of it in terms of form. Maybe you remember the distance runner Paula Ratcliffe and her signature head roll? It was clearly something that she had to do, but it must have frustrated her trainers immensely because there was energy going into that head roll which they would have preferred to be transferred to her feet.

That’s what functional training will do. It will help you lose your quirks and personal head rolls and make sure that your body works in the most economical and practical way with the happy result that you’ll be able to continue doing it into your dotage.

Weight-bearing exercise – which is where functional training comes alive - is key for all us. It helps keep osteoporosis at bay for women and it keeps muscles stronger, longer. You should probably look into it.
