Passionate About UK Grass Fed Beef

United Kingdom - If you go to the States you will find that most people are familiar with the concept ‘grass fed beef’ relating to all manner of meat products. The concept grew from a minority’s passionate disgust of the enormous feed lot beef systems that produce most of America’s beef, conscious shoppers want to buy healthy foods from ‘old fashioned farm systems’ and deal with real farmers that care.

In the UK we are lucky to have avoided (on the whole) the huge industrialised farming units of America, but much of our meat is still reared on cereals and rarely gets the chance to see the great outdoors let alone eat a blade of grass!

The use of cereal feeds came about at the time of subsidised arable production when grain prices were falsely low, the outcome was a move away from traditional pasture reared livestock to ‘finishing’ systems based on housing animals and feeding them cheap grains.

The problem of grain feeding is this

1 – It is bad for the animal – Beef animals are not designed to eat grain and therefor get sick, the farmer has to use anti-biotics and other drugs and it is a race to get the animals fat before they get too sick. A grain diet also creates an acidic environment that is perfect for pathogens like e-coli to thrive, these can be passed on to humans. UK Grass fed beef animals are healthy naturally.

2 – The meat is not as nutritious – The acidic environment in a grain fed beef animal’s gut stops the healthy normal production of CLA, Omega 3 and other beneficial nutrients. It increases the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 in the meat that is produced, this ‘bad’ ratio is associated with inflammation and linked to many diseases of modern society.UK Grass fed beef has up to 5 times the amount of omega 3 and a good omega 3 to omega 6 ratio, it had higher levels of vitamin E and beta Carotene.

3 – The animals are not behaving naturally – They simply dot get to roam around eating grass and are often in sheds in cramped dirty conditions.UK Grass fed beef animals are acting as cows are designed to.

4 – Grain production uses vast amounts of water and has a ‘heavy’ Carbon footprint. It usually requires large amounts of fossil fuels in the form of fertilisers and fuels and will rely heavily on chemical pesticides. Much grain used for feeding is Soya based and much of this comes from areas of the Amazon and other important habitats that are being sacrificed to produce this lucrative crop. Grass fed beef UK is some of the most sustainable meat you can buy.
