OVARIAN CYST

by Planet Ayurveda Holistic healing through herbs
Ovarian cyst is a collection of fluid which is surrounded by a very thin wall within an ovary. Any ovarian follicle which is larger than about 2 cms is termed as an ovarian cyst. Cysts range as a small as pea to larger than an orange in size. Some of the cysts are harmless and are functional in nature. This type of cysts affects women of all ages. Some of the cysts cause problems like bleeding and pain. To remove cysts larger than five cms in diameter, surgery is required. Ovarian cysts are fluid –filled sacs that can form in the ovaries. These are very common during the childbearing years.  There are several different types of ovarian cysts and most common is a functional cyst. It forms during ovulation.

CLASSIFICATION OF OVARIAN CYSTS:

There are 3 types of cysts:
  • FUNCTIONAL
  • NON –FUNCTIONAL
  • JUVENILE

FUNCTIONAL CYST:

These form as a normal part of the menstrual cycle. There are several types of cysts:

  • FOLLICULAR CYST: It is the most common type of ovarian cyst. In menstruating women, a follicle containing the ovum (unfertilized egg) will rupture during ovulation. If this does not occur, a follicular cyst of more than 2.5 cm diameter may result.
  • CORPUS LUTEUM CYST: It appears after ovulation. The corpus luteum is the remnant of the follicle after the ovum has moved to the fallopian tubes. This normally degrades within 5–9 days. A corpus lutem that is more than 3 cm is defined as cystic.
  • THECAL CYST: It occurs within the thecal layer of cells surrounding developing oocytes. Under the influence of excessive HCG, thecal cells may proliferate and become cystic. This is usually on both ovaries.

NON FUNCTIONAL CYST:

It includes an ovary with many cysts, cyts caused by endometriosis known as chocolate cysts, borderline tumoral cysts, paraovarian cyst.

JUVENILE CYST:

This type of cysts are more common in premenarchal girls and found in 68% of ovaries of girls from 2- 12 yrs old and 84% of ovaries of girls in 0-2 yrs old. The smaller cysts disappear within 6 months the larger ones appear to be more persistent.

TREATMENT:

About 95% of ovarian cysts are benign and not cancerous. Some functional cysts usually resolve themselves,  but some bigger ovarian cyst are less likely to disappear on its own. Treatment of cyst depends on the size of the cyst. Pain associated with ovarian cysts may be treated in several ways:
  • Pain relievers may reduce the pain but they didn’t give the permanent solution for your problem.
  • A warm bath or heating pad applied to the lower abdomen near the ovaries can relax tense muscles and relieve cramping.
  • Combined oral contraceptive pill are the hormones in the pills which may regulate the menstrual cycle.

  • HEAT: Heat is helpful in reducing the pain and cramps during the ovarian cysts. Steps are:
  1. Put a heating pad or hot bottle on your abdomen.
  2. Do this for at least 15 min.
  3. Follow this whenever you feel pain.
  • CASTOR OIL PACKS: It is an age old remedy for ovarian cysts. It clears the body from toxins. It dissolves the ovarian cyst.
