Optimizing Responsive Design for Mobile

by Ben Goodman ***
It’s no surprise that mobile usage has surpassed desktop and tablet. Its mobility and accessibility have taken over the way we consume information. On a day-to-day basis, people may ask questions on a search engine through their phones and get answers in seconds. As such, optimizing for mobile has become not only optional, but necessary for every website.

One thing to take note of is load time when talking about responsive design. The key is to remember that responsive web design includes being designed to load fast—and that’s a key factor for keeping any customers interested.

If a web page loads too slowly, its bounce rate—the rate at which people will leave a website—increases. According to Google’s marketing resources, any mobile page that loads within one to three seconds has a bounce probability rate of 32 per cent, while a page that loads within one to ten seconds has a bounce probability rate of 123 per cent.

So if it’s said that responsive web design doesn’t help your load time on mobile, what can you do to remedy your mobile-optimized site?

1. Match Your Responsive Web Page With AMP

AMP stands for accelerated mobile pages. AMP is a Google-approved open source platform that allows fast page loading compared to regular HTML sites. AMP is set to focus on improving load time performance, creating a better experience on mobile devices. Additionally, because it’s supported by Google, AMP enhances your site’s mobile SEO and keyword rankings.

Content-based websites are perfect for AMP, as they allow instant access to that content. It’s ideal for websites that mainly have static content and don’t require much JavaScript.

2. Use PWAs

PWA stands for progressive web apps, which are websites that look and act like apps, but don’t need to be downloaded. Not all websites are suited for this format, however. For reference, some popular websites effectively using PWAs are usually bigger companies like Lancome Paris, Forbes, Alibaba, and Twitter.

PWAs load quickly regardless of network quality, have an instantaneous load time, and are responsive.

3. Develop a Mobile-first Mindset

Around 64 per cent of the world uses the internet on mobile, and a quarter of the world has access to the internet via mobile devices only. That said, the information you give them will be consumed one way, and they have no other options.

It’s important, then, to give your visitors a better user experience through responsive design that caters to mobile viewing. Think about how your website would look on mobile, before you think about how it would look on any other platform. Then, build your site around that design. Employ a strategy like AMP or PWA that will work best for your site, especially since responsive design’s load performance may take time.
