Online User Review Sites

by Mario Villegas Sr. Program Manager

Everyone knows that one bad review can have the same impact as ten positive ones.  Having a strong online presence can be a key advantage over competitors.  Being aware is the first step in managing that online presence. Your responsiveness to your customer’s needs can be a pivotal factor in the success of your business.

Here are the top online review sites in Restaurants and Dining:

Zagat

Considered one of the top sites, Zagat tabulates your ratings on a 30-point scale which are summarized by their editors. A unique quality is that the sites requires reviewers to qualify. Knowing this helps increase the validity and legitimacy of the reviews. Guiding your customers to this site can be used as an excellent marketing tool as readers may view a high rating with much more regard.

Gayot

GAYOT.com is another excellent source, as the reviews are written by experienced restaurant writers. Although a paid membership is required, it is well worth the professional writers. This is a great way to keep up with the latest trends and news in the industry geared toward travelers.

OpenTable

This is another site geared mainly toward travelers and tourists. Although it was originally geared towards managing online reservations, the site now allows diners to post reviews based on reservations they have made through the service. The user base is more that 12 million diners each month. With the mobile app it can be one of the best ways to find availability at the best restaurants in town.

Urbanspoon

Built as a search engine for restaurants, the site offers both reviews from professionals and local media as well user reviews. It is one of the leading local bar and restaurant guides, and is accessible and available on the major popular mobile applications.

Yelp

Quickly becoming one of the most popular review sites for stores and restaurants. It is primarily a forum for reviews. Yelp offers software, data tracking and advertising solutions for listed businesses. With the review filter, Yelp’s intentions are good. Like many of their efforts the rhetoric and execution are not a perfect fit. It’s easy to see how one might view it as evil.

Additionally there are many city-specific sites available, entertainment sites allow users to post comments about places they've visited, including restaurants.
