Most people tend to do the opposite by starving themselves and doing little or no exercise. This will only slow down your metabolism greatly. It will put your body in starvation mode and also decrease your lean body mass. Exercising will create a calorie deficit and burn the fat, but not slow down your metabolism in the process.
Going on a diet is only a temporary change to help you lose the weight you want to. The worst thing about it is that it is only 'temporary' and most people will go off of it eventually as it is unnatural to live this way. In order to really lose your fat and keep it gone permanently develop new habits that you can continue for life.
At first your new exercise and dietary changes may be uncomfortable, and sticking to them in the beginning will be challenging. After a while though your new behaviors will become as much a part of your daily routine as brushing your teeth or taking a shower. This lifestyle change is the beginning of a new leaner, healthier you.
