NIOS – An educational institution serving with a difference

by Devendra Kumar Article
Education is a powerful tool, which is capable of bringing positive changes in the life of human beings. It teaches us the values, skills, and morals required for leading a good and respectful life. Education is essential for pursuing an ideal career, which, in turn, makes life happy, satisfying, and prosperous. An educated individual becomes self-dependent and capable of making well-informed decisions. Knowing the difference between right and wrong, educated people pick the best. They are well aware of their rights, the law, and responsibilities they have towards the society.

Not surprisingly, various countries across the globe are promoting the importance of education and enabling people to make it an integral part of their lives. An example of the same is the National Institute of Open Schooling, which is an initiative of the Indian Government.

What is NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling)?

With its main office located in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, NIOS operates through a network of 15 regional centers, two sub-regional centers, and has over 3,700 study centers across India, Nepal, and the Middle East. The institute aims to fulfill the basic education needs of school drop-outs, rural youth, urban poor, ex-servicemen, people who relocate on regular basis, those with disabilities, and anyone who cannot join a regular school. Being the only national level board recognized by the Central Government of India, NIOS offers secondary and senior secondary courses that are equivalent to the certificates provided by any other board, including, but not restricted to, CBSE, ICSE, or other national or state level Examination boards.

NIOS uses study centers capable of providing quality and reliable administrative and academic support. These study centers that provide required support to secondary and senior secondary students are called Accredited Institutions (AIs). The National Institute of Open Schooling has 2000 registered study centers across India and nearly 100 affiliated study centers outside India. Students can register themselves and can attend desired classes through these affiliated institutions. For instance, those in the UAE can count on a suitable NIOS Abu Dhabi for education.

After pursuing studies at NIOS in Sharjah or anywhere else, students can go on to join the prestigious educational institutes of their choice. This is because of the high standard of the NIOS programs. The National Institute of Open Learning painstakingly develops its course materials, which are ideal for self-study. It is the largest open school in the world and conducts examinations twice a year in April and October. For greater flexibility, the NIOS has also introduced the On Demand Examination System (ODES) at the Secondary and Senior Secondary levels. Students who have passed 10th class from any approved education board from any country can join NIOS.

It is but natural for online learners to have several queries related to admissions, results, course structure, examinations, etc. To enable students to conveniently seek answers to all these queries, the National Institute of Open Schooling has conceptualized “Learner Support Centre” (LSC). Functioning just like a call center, the LSC executives go overboard in satisfying learner queries.

NIOS strives to promote education in all sections of society. It enables every student who cannot join a regular school due to any reason to receive a quality education.
