New Business Opportunities Still to be Discovered

by Phillip Presley Student

Running a small business can be very fulfilling, but there is just no denying the fact that it is also extremely difficult. Managing your own company takes a lot of time and energy—of course, if you are doing what you love then all of the legwork is small potatoes. The blood, sweat, and tears you put into making your business successful is a price you pay without a second thought because the job itself is so fulfilling.

But small business owners are currently facing a double whammy, what with the poor state of our economy. Not only are they having to invest all of their time into their business, they are also having to take the possibility of a significant failure as a direct result of economic recession.

Yet despite all of this, there are still plenty of business opportunities out there just waiting to be seized by the smart entrepreneur:

  • Most people are under the impression that a recession means that the consumer is no longer spending any of their money preferring, instead to keep their funds safely within their pockets. This is not the case; a recession is not the stoppage of consumer dollars, it is the relocation of them. During a recession, people will spend their money differently—instead of going out to dinner, or to the movies, they will invest in better insurance or thinks like nonperishable food items. A wise enterpriser would do well to take this fact into account in his business endeavors.

  • Recessions prompt consumers to reevaluate their standards of living and their spending habits. Often, people will downsize their homes and trade in their vehicles for ones with more affordable payments. A new business specializing in hauling or cleaning would do well in these circumstances. With so many people moving all across the nation, they are going to need somebody to move all of their possessions. Why not make that somebody your business?

  • When unemployment is so high and cash is so tightly held onto businesses that sell secondhand items tend to thrive. Opening a thrift shop may very well be a good way to pay for those bills.

Another thing to consider, regardless of the economic climate, is the mindset of society. If you can keep up with the ever-changing wants of the consumer, and then convince them that those wants are needs, your business will succeed. Consider the modern trends:

  • Right now, people are fascinated with organic health foods. People are no longer satisfied simply being “vegetarians,” they want to be “gluten-free” and “vegan” as well. A grocery store specializing in granola and protein powders would be pretty darn successful in the modern society.

  • With everybody so bent on becoming fit and trim, they are going to need exercise gear. Whether they are actually going to be using this equipment or simply displaying it to show off is not your concern—your job is to provide all of those “healthy” people with the gear they desire. This is a golden opportunity for any entrepreneur.

  • Do you know what else people like? Internet connections. Know what else? Coffee. Example A: Starbucks. You know something else people like? Patronizing off-the-beaten path cafes. Please, somebody seize this opportunity!

There are plenty of business opportunities out there for you to pursue. All you need is some imagination, and a lot of moxie.
