In the year 1990, 15% of Americans were obese, but by 2010, 25% or more people in 36 states were obese while the obesity rate exceeded 30% in 12 of these states. Today, over one third of Americans are obese (36%) and two out of three (69%) are either obese or overweight.

Being obese can lead to some serious health issues, including high blood pressure, stroke, heart diseases, osteoarthiritis, type-2 diabetes and back pain. Research has shown that if weight loss is needed, even losing 5% of weight can make a difference. Making some minute changes in one’s diet and enhancing the everyday physical activity is generally all that is takes to start losing weight. One can begin by bringing about some simple changes in everyday schedule, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Feel good factor is enhanced and energy levels are increased once a person loses weight. Additionally, one gets to enjoy numerous health benefits, including lower cholesterol levels, reduced blood pressure, improved mobility and better sleep.

Some basic lifestyle changes can also facilitate weight loss. One of the major culprits that lead to obesity is high consumption of sugar. Sugar has become an indispensable part of our diets, and is used abundantly in sodas, ice-creams, candies, fruit juices, tea and coffee. It is also found in mayonnaise, peanut butter, ketchup, spaghetti sauce and most of the meals cooked in microwave, resulting in Americans consuming a lot more sugar than they should. On an average, American adults consume 22 teaspoons of sugar everyday while children consume around 32 teaspoons per day, whereas the quantity recommended by American Heart Association is no more than 9½ teaspoons per day. Sugar not just leads to weight gain but also causes premature ageing. It paves way for cardiovascular diseases, which were unheard of in 1900s. As a result of consuming sugar, insulin levels are enhanced, which decrease the release of growth hormones and suppress the immune system. Sugar consumption has also been broadly linked with occurrence of diabetes, which has many ill effects on health. Numbness in hands and feet are common signs of diabetes.

Replacing sugar with natural sweeteners is a great way to fight obesity and overcome the potential ill effects that sugar can have on people’s health and well being. Natural sweeteners like honey, stevia and maple syrup are nutritious, rich in vitamins and can have many additional health advantages, like acting as anti-oxidisers apart from helping people lose weight. Natural weight loss supplements like Raspberry Ketones are also helpful in enabling people to lose weight and lead a healthier and more fulfilling life.

If you notice any signs of diabetes, like fatigue, frequent colds or flu, and unexplainable hunger or thirst at odd times, it is the right time to make a switchover from sugar to natural sweeteners like honey, agave extract, barley malt syrup, blackstrap molasses or date syrup. Signs of diabetes should be acted upon as soon as they show up, and treatment should not be delayed, lest they turn out to be more harmful.
