Natural Health Medicine. What is it and Do We Need It?

Natural health medicine is a system of natural therapies from various sources that builds and restores health and wellness by working with the natural recuperative powers of the human body. Natural health medicine offers a noninvasive, practical approach to preventing and treating disease using time tested remedies such as herbs, vitamins, spices, homeopathy and a healthy diet.

Natural health covers every aspect of who you are. You are not just your body; you are not just your mind. You are a very complex and unique entity with emotions, feelings and thoughts. Your emotions, feelings and thoughts have a very big bearing on your physical health. When you ignore your emotional health, sooner or later you’ll suffer physical ill health.

Natural Health Medicine Supplements

Natural health medicine supplements consist of, among others, antioxidants, immunity boosting supplements, joint care supplements, respiratory health supplements, skin care supplements e.t.c. They also include: energy providing formulas, natural detoxification products, health care products for sleep and relaxation, weight control and to normalize various body functions. There are also natural health supplements and health care products that are exclusively for men and women.

What Makes Health Supplements Essential

Natural health medicines, as mentioned earlier, are usually mixtures or formulas with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, nutrients and proteins which the human body requires regularly and can consume easily. You may be having a very puzzled look on your face right now and wondering... doesn't food have that already? Well, not really... We live in a world where fast/junk foods are gradually becoming "staple foods" for many people. These types of foods do not provide complete nutrition. Most are nutritionally empty and the only thing they seem to have in abundance are the large amounts of fattening calories. This results in malnutrition, obesity and increasing cases of all manner of 'wild' illnesses and debilitating conditions.

The most effective supplements are those created from food, and not those chemically manufactured - synthetics. Yes, the chemical supplements tend to be cheaper, but - and this is very important - they are less biologically available to our bodies. This means they are not easily absorbed and normally end up being excreted by the human body - what a waste! Food based supplements such as those sourced from herbs and spices and other pure substances are much more bio-available and more readily absorbed by the human body.

An important consideration: Because dietary supplements are not as strictly regulated as drugs, some may not be as effective as they are touted to be - especially those manufactured and sold by quacks. Some supplements may also interact with medications. This can lead to unwanted side effects and lower the efficacy of prescribed medicine.

For optimal benefits and as a rule of thumb, always consult your doctor, a naturopath or herbal specialist about the right dietary supplements for you. Also, research supplement ingredients before you purchase them.

I'd like to end this article with a quote from Andrew Thomas Weil, MD. An American author and physician who established the field of integrative medicine - a healing oriented approach to health care that encompasses the body, mind, and spirit - which attempts to integrate alternative and conventional medicine. He is also the author of several best selling books promoting general health and healthy aging:

"Treatment originates outside you; healing comes from within." - from 'Health and Healing' by Andrew Weil, MD

Dr. Andrew Weil's take on vitamins, supplements & herbs: "When it comes to obtaining the micronutrients your body needs, your best possible source is food, especially fruits and vegetables. But circumstances may prevent you from eating optimally every day. The main reason I take nutritional supplements is for insurance against gaps in my diet. I take supplements faithfully and encourage my patients to do so as well."
