The city Bologna is a historical place which has around 400,000 inhabitants.  This city is famous for old universities, lively student population, brick terracotta-roofed porticos and architecture, nightlife and theatre. Also the city is known for its cuisine.  There are many hotels and restaurants which serve la cucina Bolognese and whoever visits this place are bound to taste the local cuisine which is so mouth watering.  It is also viewed as a well administered and progressive city.  It is one of the largest preserved historic regions among all the cities. The town centre is characterized by attractive covered walkways which is known as porticos and is considered as one of the Europe’s best preserved.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Bologna is from March to October when it is warm and is best for outdoor dining and drinking. Or else, you could sit in squares like Piazza Maggiore and Piazza Santo Stefano. However, in July and August it is particularly very hot. Many of the restaurants and shops are closed for summer vacation.  It would be very cold in winter, but this place is very beautiful during Christmas time. January and February features blue cloudless skies and it would be the coldest. You would require hat, gloves, scarf and coat.

Art galleries and museums to visit

Archaeological Museum: This building houses a collection of antiquities such as Egyptian civilization, Villanova Iron Age culture, funerary art, Etruscan Velzna’s artifacts, ancient vases from Roman times.

National picture gallery:  It contains the most important art work of Raffaello, Giotto, Parmigianino, Tiziano, Perugino and Tintoretto.

University museums:  There are many small, interesting museums like:

·         Museo Ostertrico

·         The Museo Aldovrandi- Collection of Renaissance naturalist

·         The museo Navale- Collection of maps and model warships of 18th century

·         Museo di Antropologia- Artifacts and bones of prehistoric Italians

·         Museo della Specola- It is the astronomical tower that is built in 18th century beginning.

·         Museo di Mineralogia- It has a collection of rare minerals, meteorites and precious stones.

·         Philharmonic Academy- This was built in 1666.  It has become a hotspot for musical life of city and now its fame is known all around the Europe.

Restaurants, Parks, Gardens

In this place, there are varied choices to eat and it is considered as food capital of Italy.  The famous restaurants in this place are Gamberini, Da Leonida, Entoeca Italiana, etc.

The parks of these regions were the earlier private gardens of royalty.  Few of the famous parks are mentioned below which are the main attraction of this city.

·         Parco Montagnola- Since 17th century, it is a public park. More landscapes were done in 19th century. Later on a pond was added in the year 1888.

·         Margherita gardens-  it is the main park of this city.  In summer evenings, the chalet gets converted to a night club.

·         Villa spada-  It is on the grounds of villa Palazzo Ravone and was open to tourists only in 1970.

Certosa- This is the main cemetery which was built over the European necropolis ruins and it has beautifully carved tombstones.
