Mumbai Local Train Ridership Nears Pre-COVID Level As City Returns To Normalcy

by Suraj V. Digital Marketing (sr. SEO Expert)

After the Maharashtra government allowed non-vaccinated citizens to use buses and trains earlier this month, it has been observed that Mumbai's public transport is carrying the magic number of 1 crore on a daily average.

This also comes at a time when the health experts have warned of the fourth wave of the novel virus in June.

As the city returns to normalcy, the crowds inside local trains are rising day by day. However, owing to the pandemic-induced lockdown, the number of commuters had dropped drastically on both CR and WR in the last two years.

Maharashtra government on March 31 had announced to lift all COVID-19 restrictions.

For the first time ever since the pandemic began, the suburban local trains in Mumbai on both Central and Western Railways (WR) are carrying 70-72 lakhs every day.

This is just 6-8 lakhs short of pre-COVID times when 78-80 lakhs people were travelling.

According to reports, Central Railways (CR) on a daily average is ferrying 40-42 lakh while WR is carrying 28-30 lakh on a daily average.

Besides, even the air-conditioned (AC) trains have seen a spike in the ridership amid the rising heat in Mumbai. The CR authorities are running 60 AC local services on a daily basis while the WR is running 28 AC services.

The most commuters on CR are observed at Dombivli with 80,637 users, followed by Thane at 70,550 and Kalyan at 60,633.

Meanwhile, the WR is seeing a rush inside their AC locals, especially during peak hours, it was 15,355 passengers per day inside AC locals in March, which is a good sign.

On the other hand, the The BEST buses, which were the lifeline during the lockdown too, are seeing a consistent increase in daily passengers. As per data, BEST is ferrying 30 lakh people on an average every day.

In fact, the transport body is expecting it to reach to 35 lakhs in next few months. In order to increase the footfall, BEST will soon start the 'tap-in, tap-out system of ticketing from this week.

This used to be less than 20-25 lakh until late last year and since the easing of lockdown, their numbers have gone up.
