On the Tanzania side of the Kenya border near moshi mount Kilimanjaro stands on a featureless part of the east African plateau with side by side smaller mount meru. Kilimanjaro is actually the agglomeration of three distinct volcanoes which are kibo, mwenzi. And shira and there mountains are extinct volcanoes. The creation of the great rift valley is geologically associated with the Kilimanjaro's violent creation which is situated 100 km to the west.

Due to the catastrophic movements in the earth’s crust mountain Kilimanjaro was born and it also created the great rift valley which is connected with red sea through Tanzania to southern Africa. East Africa was a huge flat plain around 25 years ago which was buckled and ruptured when the African and Eurasian continental plates rebounded off each other which causes huge rifting and spots which are weak in the thinning crust which created many volcanos in that region. The volcanic activity was greatest eventually forming the huge volcanoes of ngorongoro crater on the rift itself where the original valley was deepest and to the east including meru, Kenya and Kilimanjaro a string of volcanoes.

There are five major ecological zones in mount Kilimanjaro and the of the activities are controlled by the five factors of altitude, rainfall, temperature, flora and fauna. Approximately 100 m in altitude each zone occupies an area and is subjected to a corresponding decrease in temperature, rainfall, and life from the frost upwards.

There is a micro climate around the east African mountains and to their south and east supplies the rain shadow created the towns of moshi and arusha which are situated on beautiful and superbly fertile land which is covered with full banana groves and coffee plantations. All the mountains above the tree line are comprised by the Kilimanjaro national park and six forest corridors which is stretch through the forest belt.

The area above 2700 meters on the mountain is known as mount Kilimanjaro national park. The shira plateau, kibo and mawenzi peak is included as the moorland and highland in the Kilimanjaro national park. Through the Kilimanjaro forest reserve the Kilimanjaro park has six corridors or right of way. In 1921 the forest reserve or which is also known as game reserve was established and the park was established in 1973 and opened in 1977 officially.
