MOOC’S -The future of education

Online education is gaining popularity and everyone believes it is the next big thing in the field of education and educational systems. Students are now opening up to the concept of online education for the sheer benefits it has to offer in term of convenience and flexibility in term of time, location and subjects. It also is easy on the pockets and there are several MOOC’s (massive open online courses) which let you decide if this is what you want to do. It gives you the liberty to either continue or discontinue with a course basis your liking and interest. 

A few trends likely to be expected in the near future are listed below
• There will be ten’s and thousands of MOOC’s that will be available to students in all parts of the world. These MOOC’s will range right from arts to engineering and students will be exposed to a possibility of choices. 
• MOOC’s will get personal. Currently it is considered that online courses/education is impersonal due to the lack of human interaction involved. However this is likely to change in the near future with the improvement in interactive technologies. These technologies will evolve with time and Mooc learning will personalize further. Not only will this it also lay the path to navigate courses that fit specific learning style and speed. 
• Employers are increasingly accepting candidates who own degrees from such Mooc’s. This would result in the traditional accreditation being diversified, beyond the college degrees. 
• Traditional and online education would soon be one. In the next couple of years traditional education would be combined with online education. This would be a result of the student demand in terms of flexibility, convenience and effectiveness of learning that online education and course offer. 
• There would be continuous learning unlike the time bound course available in colleges and universities, wherein the student has specific subjects to be covered in a specific time frame. Online education and courses would offer continuous learning. Even after a student is employed he/she could upgrade or keep themselves up to date with the latest courses through an annual subscription to the university. Students in this case would be continuous learners cultivating new skill sets throughout their career. 
• Online education and MOOC’s will reduce the skill gaps. Employers will encourage the employees to take up such courses with self-assessment preparedness tests in specific skill sets when hired; or even later to keep pace with emerging trends and technologies.
• For decades now professors and educators have believed that education should be customized basis the student and his learning abilities/disabilities. Every student in an individual with unique needs, talents and goals. Mooc’s are not only bringing education to more people but are also tailoring the need of tomorrow’s students, universities and employers.
• Mooc’s are also incorporating several online time and attendance systems that help them keep track of the students who have applied for such courses to ensure regularity.

With so many possibilities in store for us in the future we must truly be excited to witness this revolution in the education system.
