Methanol Fuels : Know About Methanol Fuels, Uses, benefits

by Lalbabu Prasad SEO Executive
Under the 1992 Energy Policy Act, Methanol (CH3OH), also called wood alcohol, can be considered an alternative fuel. Methanol is an engine fuel with similar chemical and physical properties to ethanol. Methanol was once used for transportation purposes in the 1990s, but it is no longer being developed or used.

Production

This fuel is usually made by steam-reforming natural gases to make a synthesis gaz. This synthesis gas is fed into a catalyst-equipped reactor to produce methanol and water vapor. There are many feedstocks that can be used to produce methanol. However, natural gas is the most cost-effective.

Benefits

Methanol can be used as an alternative to traditional transportation fuels. Methanol has many benefits:

Lower production costs--Methanol can be produced at a lower cost than other fuels.

Safety improvements - Methanol is less flammable than gasoline.

Increased energy security - Methanol can be made from a variety domestic carbon-based feedstocks like biomass, natural gas and coal.

Research and Development

Methanol was first promoted in the 1990s to be an alternative fuel for compatible cars. Nearly 6 million gasoline gallon equivalents to 100% methanol, and blends of 15% gasoline and 85% methanol were used annually in alternative fuel cars in the United States.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducted research on the future of natural gases as a feedstock in order to facilitate more widespread adoption of Methanol as a transport fuel.
