Mental illness, what exactly does it mean?
by Vipul rastogi Psychologist in Gurgaon | Gurgaon Clinics | PsychiIf you go out and ask
any soul, the most common answer you will get is ‘Crazy’.An illness of the mind
is as common and normal as an illness of the heart or liver and so on. Yet, it
is a very hushed topic. Beats me why!
Mental illness
encompasses disorders or changes in emotions, thinking, behavior or a
combination of all three of these. They impair the day-to-day functioning of a
person in their professional or personal lives.
The stats of mental
illness around the globe are much more than people think. 10.7% of the global
population suffers from some mental illness or other. According to WHO, about
7.5% of Indians suffer from mental health issues.
How are mental health and mental illness
related?
These two terms are
often used as being one and the same thing which is not quite correct. They are
related for sure . Mental health is the overall well-being of your mind.
Productivity, healthy relationships, adapting to change and adversity- these
are signs of good mental health.
Mental illness is an
umbrella term for the several psychiatric and psychological diseases that
humans can suffer from. Depression,
anxiety, bipolar disorder are all examples of mental illnesses. When
your mental health is unstable or bad for a prolonged time, you might develop
mental illnesses. They are a sign that your body needs help.
Symptoms and triggers
of mental illnesses are sometimes easy to spot, mostly not. However, it has
been found that children as young as 3 years old can have symptoms of mental
illnesses like depression. The age group most affected is between 18 to 29 and
then 45- 64.People can develop a mental illness as a result of genetics,
environmental factors, trauma or head injury.
If you or anyone you
know seems to be having any symptoms, they should immediately get evaluated by
psychiatrists. This will provide factors
which might be causing the symptoms as well as the course of action.
The field of
psychiatry and mental health has so much that we still don’t know or can’t
comprehend. It is severely
underdeveloped if you compare with some other fields of medicine.
India has some pretty
good psychiatrists and psychologists but not as many as needed. Also,
psychological help is not accessible or affordable for everyone. Since there is
no specialized test required for psychiatry after MBBS, students end up taking
it lightly and that’s where the problem of shortage of good psychiatrists
starts. If you are in cities like Gurgaon, Kolkata, etc, it won’t be very difficult for you to
find a psychiatrist that suits you.
Hop on a quick Google
search for ‘Best Psychiatrist in
Gurgaon’. Compare the top results. Go through the pricing qualifications and reviews of the top few
psychiatrists, see the clinics in Gurgaon in which they sit and book your
appointments.
With the right match
and therapy, you can ensure good or better mental health for yourself and
others.
