Measure Space to Calculate the Amount of Grout Required

by Paul Toomey Marketing Manager

It is a pleasure to install new tiles in the kitchen, it gives a new look and refreshes the kitchen. But everything should be planned before to keep the whole installation within the budget. Whether it is DIY or the workers do, there should be a calculation of how many tiles and the amount of grout required. Workers sometimes give a wrong calculation and if you overbuy it would be a waste. At least a few numbers of tiles would be ok but if the grout is more it would be a mere waste. While installing the tiles, the major materials purchased would be the tiles and the grout.

Grout: It is paste or mortar which is used in between the tiles. It gives an attractive and smooth finish to the whole work.

Purchase Grout: There are many qualities in the grout. It is better to purchase the best quality to avoid re-work. There are many types of colors available in the grout.

Amount of Grout Required: Consider three things—Size of the space to be tiled, the size of the tile and the type of spacers. It is necessary to make a correct calculation to avoid wastage.

Measure: Measure the space where the tiling has to be done. The measurements should be precise. If the room is a perfect square or rectangle then it would be very easy. By multiplying the length and the width we get the area of the space. If space is broken then measure the small squares. But if there is an island in the kitchen then the measurement has to be broken and it has to be calculated. The smaller and the bigger measurement areas have to be added to get the space measurement

Tiles Measurement: All the tiles in the market come in different sizes. The size and the thickness of the tile have to be considered to know how much grout is required.

Spacers: The spacer’s size also is considered. The gap and the depth of it are measured to determine the grout required.

Determine the grout: If the area is 5m2 where 7.5x15 with 2mm spacer is used then a 3kg bag of grout is required. The same grout can be used for 15m2 where 60x60 tiles are used with 2mm spacer. There may be some problems in the calculation but it is better to talk to the dealer or an expert in calculating and purchasing. It is always advised to buy at least ten percent more than required. This extra would help as there are wastages during installation. Many manufacturers have customer service team to get the customer doubts clarified
