Marfan syndrome is an inherited disorder which causes damage to connective tissues. Connective tissues are found everywhere in the body and they play a major role of supporting various bodily structures and organs. In this disorder, connective tissues in blood vessels, heart, eyes and skeleton great affected. This disorder is caused by mutation in a gene that is responsible for elasticity and strength of connective tissues.

Treatment is given to keep blood pressure normal and to reduce strain on aorta. In some cases, surgey is necessary to repair the affected parts. Since Marfan syndrome is a genetic condition, having a parent with this condition is a prominent risk factor. This condition affects both men and women and all the races equally.

Symptoms: - Symptoms differ from person to person. Some people experience only mild symptoms while some experience severe life3 threatening symptoms. This condition may worsen with age.

1. Flat feet

2. Tall and thin body

3. Bodily disproportions in arms, legs and fingers

4. Malformed breastbone

5. Heart murmurs

6. Nearsightedness

7. Abnormal curvatures in spine or teeth

Complications: - Marfan syndrome can cause complications in any part of the body.

Cardiovascular complications: - Marfan syndrome can cause severe damage to heart and blood vessels. It can cause weakening of connective tissues that support aorta. The damage caused to aorta can cause many complications.

1. Aortic aneurysm: - This condition is characterized by formation of bulge in the aortic wall. It is caused by increased pressure of blood pumped out by the heart.

2. Aortic dissection: - The wall of aorta is made up of layers. When the dissection occurs, the blood leaks between innermost and outermost layers of aorta. It can cause severe pain in chest or back. It may weaken the vessels and increases the possibility of rupture. It can be a life threatening condition.

3. Valve malformations: - People with Marfan syndrome can have malformed or overly elastic valve. It can cause heart failure by making heart to work more.

Eye complications:-

1. Lens dislocation: - Ectopia Lentis or dislocation of lens in the eye affects at least 50% of people who have Marfan’s syndrome. It occurs on account of weakening to the muscle structures that support the lens to stay at its place.

2. Retinal complications:- Retinal complications such as retinal detachment or tear in the retina can occur in some people

3. Other eye problems: - People who have Marfan’s syndrome can have other eye related problems like Glaucoma or cataracts. Although they are usually age related problems, they can occur in early age if Marfan syndrome is present.

Skeletal complications: -

Marfan syndrome can lead to abnormal spinal curvatures like scoliosis. It can lead to abnormal development of ribs. It is manifested in the form of protrusion or sunken appearance of breast bone. One may also experience low back pain and foot pain.

Complications of pregnancy: - Marfan syndrome can cause harm to aorta by weakening its cells. . During pregnancy, aorta is under extra stress and a woman’s heart pumps more blood thn usual. This can increase the risk of aortal dissection or rupture.
