Major Facts About Fire Suppression System

by Bhavna S. Analyst

Fire is a very common disaster that can take place at anytime, anywhere and this is why it’s important to follow all the preventive measures to manage a disaster like this. Be it a residential complex, a shopping mall, an organization or a hospital, every premise should be equipped with the right firefighting device. In fact, all the premises should be equipped with the most appropriate firefighting equipment so that the casualties can be kept at a check. It’s important to figure out which device works best for which situation. For instance, a fire suppression system works best for certain situations, while fire sprinkler systems are considered to be most apt for some other types of fire. If you are planning to invest in a fire suppression system, here are some quick facts that you should know about this type of firefighting device.

What is a fire suppression system?

A fire suppression system is an advanced equipment that helps fight fire. It is designed in a way that it either helps put out a fire completely or stops it from spreading widely. This type of device is usually used together with smoke detectors, heat detectors or fire alarms. This helps protect the different physical structures and the people from any kind of casualties.

What are the most common types of fire suppression systems?

There are different types of fire suppression systems that are used for controlling different situations. Broadly speaking, there are three main categories of fire suppression system – water, chemical agents and inert gases. Let’s take a look at how these three types of devices work –

Inert gases – Fires need a lot of oxygen to spread and this is why inert gases are considered to be an effective fire suppressant. These gases reduce the oxygen supply and thus puts out the fire effectively. The release of the different inert gases like argon or nitrogen is usually considered as dangerous. However, when these gases are used properly, these prove to be extremely effective. These types of fire suppression systems work best in situations when water might cause damages. For instance, these devices should be used to put out fire in an area that is surrounded by costly electrical equipment.

Water – These types of fire suppression systems are the most well-known type and these are used to a great extent. There are both automatic and manual sprinkler systems available in the market and one can choose based on the exact requirement. Automatic fire sprinklers are usually connected to a fire detector or a smoke detector and this is why these get triggered whenever there is a smoke or a flame.

Chemical agent – Both wet and dry chemicals are used in these types of fire suppression systems. Potassium carbonate is one of the most common type of wet chemical, while sodium bicarbonate is the most popular dry chemical that is used in fire suppression systems.

These are some of the most important facts about fire suppression systems that you must know about.
