Major Factors That Lead to Depression Among Teenagers

The hectic routine of everyday life and the tough economic conditions along with various other factors have made depression a common phenomenon. Besides the elder who face such situations and it has become normal for them to get depressed, there are teens as well who are experiencing depression.

There are certain factors that cause depression among teens. The lines below mention the major factors of teen depression under the light of several authentic researches.

1. Family History- Family history is another contributory factor of depression. Researchers have proven that depression might be transferred through genetics. According to a research, 20-50% of teens have a family history of depression.

2. Substance Abuse- Substance abuse is one of the major causes of depression among people in their adolescence. Teenagers who are dealing with substance abuse of any type, such as alcohol abuse, stimulant withdrawal, or cocaine abuse are also prone to depression.

3. Medical Conditions- There are certain medical conditions that cause and increase the chances of depression among teenagers. The common conditions that are associated with depression are:

  • Anxiety disorder
  • Dysthymia
  • Substance abuse disorder
  • Antisocial disorder


4. Gender- Among genders, teenage girls are more prone to depression compared to boys as girls are more socially dependant and require positive social response in their relationships compared to boys.

5. Physical Factors- There are certain physical factors that can also lead to depression in teenagers. The factors may include:

  • Low weight at time of birth
  • Stimulation seeking or fearless behavior
  • Insensitivity to any physical punishment
  • Learning problems


6. Stressful Events- The relationship among stressful events of life and the chances of developing depression is very strong and well-established. As the mind of children is fragile, therefore, any stressful event experienced by them during their teenage or before that. The stressful events that can cause depression among teens may include:

  • Extreme parental fighting
  • Psychological and physical abuse
  • Poverty
  • Neglect
  • Overcrowded home

The teenagers, who have medical conditions, have had a stressful life, are female, have family history of depression are more prone to experiencing or developing it during their teenage compared to other teenagers who have none of these factors.
