Losing Weight more effectively for Athletes

by Fitfoodies Mantra fitfoodies
Every one of us needs at least a certain amount of body fat so that we are able to perform our daily, basic functions better. But for sportsperson and athletes, if the fat percentage in the body crosses a certain limit, then it will only start affecting negatively on their career and body as well.

Athletes in particular, need to approach the whole process and idea of weight-loss cautiously. So to help them do just that, here are a few weight-loss tips for sportsperson and athletes in particular lose weight effectively, as curated by our Sports Dietician in Delhi.

•        Say no to added Sugar and yes to Fiber
Low-carb diets have become very popular when it comes to helping people reduce weight effectively. This is due to the fact that such diets give almost 35%-40% less calories to the body. But low-carb diets, that too the ones done suddenly and not drastically, is not a good idea for athletes, as it will, for, sure affect their performance and even training.

The best way to reduce carb intake without it affecting the athlete’s performance or training is by cutting out added sugars from the diet. One needs to start checking food labels now in order to avoid added sugar. Any food labels stating sucrose, fructose or glucose should be avoided. Instead try to indulge in vegetables and fruits that are high in fiber, since they will leave you feeling fuller and more satisfied, without making you feel the need to indulge or binge on carbs.

•        Strength training all the way!

Muscle loss is a common issue when it comes to people who are trying to lose weight, other than, of course the fat that they have lost. It is the same with athletes as well. The intake of proteins can often help, but only to an extent, in preventing muscle loss during such stages of dieting. Also remember to NOT indulge in crash diets, since these will end up doing more harm than good.

Weight lifting aka strength training is your best bet when you are looking to lose weight yet maintain your muscles too. Combine your strength training routine with protein intake, and it has been proven to have produced amazing effects. But before you decide to indulge in any new exercises by merely consulting the internet, have a word with your coach to see if it is ok.

•        Protein is your best friend
It is a known fact that protein helps tremendously when it comes to promoting weight loss; there are no second thoughts when it comes to this. This is due to many reasons. First off, the consumption of proteins helps make you feel fuller and also helps burn more calories during the process of digestion.

Like we have mentioned previously, the intake of protein also helps prevent muscle loss, a common problem faced by many during their weight loss journey. So make sure you include proteins in your diet!

Fat loss is obviously a very important part of an athlete's and sportsperson routine to help them maintain their health. But what needs to be kept in mind is that it is done in such a manner that it does not end up affecting their sports performance or even their health. Always remember to consult your coach/doctor before making a change in your diet/workout routine.
