Kidneys constitute an important part of our body and any damage to them, either by birth or due to our changing lifestyles can deteriorate their health. Many patients have one single kidney and still living healthy. Why? This is because even when you have a single kidney, the other can compensate and perform the remaining work without any problem. There are many reasons why you may have a single kidney, and these may include:

• Some people have a single kidney since birth

• There may have been some sort of cancer in one of the kidneys for which doctors suggested removal of the one

• In case they went for kidney donation during organ transplant
Having a single kidney is not so problematic as long as you are taking care of the kidneys. Here are some preventive tips for your reference:

• If you have high blood pressure or diabetes-related condition, then achieve your blood sugar and blood pressure goals

• Consume less sodium, potassium, and protein as they pressurize your kidneys

• If you notice swelling in your body parts such as feet, ankles, and hands, then consult your healthcare provider

• Do not ignore the signs of kidney damage

• Avoid intense workout to prevent pressure on your kidneys
