Lcd Vs Led Vs Qled Tvs: What’s The Difference?

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

With so many acronyms and so much other jargon swirling around the technology world these days, it’s understandable that you may be a little confused about what you read in the technical specifications of TVs.

Thankfully though, while the various technological aspects of TVs can be very complex, you don’t need to be as knowledgeable about them as the average LED TV manufacturer to establish what you require in your own next TV, and what you don’t.

So, here’s our quick rundown of the things that differentiate LCD, LED and QLED TVs, as you’ll find in our online store here at Ferguson.

LCD and LED go hand in hand

The acronyms LCD and LED are mentioned so apparently interchangeably by TV manufacturers and sellers, you may wonder whether there’s much difference between the two at all.

As it happens, an LED TV is actually just a specific type of LCD TV. What’s more, as all LCD TVs now use LED lights, there’s no practical difference between them as far as purchasing a new TV is concerned. But of course, older LCD TVs that don’t draw upon LED technology still exist, which helps to explain why the separate terms ‘LCD’ and ‘LED’ continue to be widely used.

To get a bit more technical for a moment, ‘LCD’ stands for liquid crystal display, with a liquid crystal display panel being used to control where light is displayed on the screen of an LCD or LED TV.

LED’, meanwhile, is short for light-emitting diode, an array of which is used to illuminate the screen of an LED TV, such as the 16”, 24” and 40” models – among other sizes – that Ferguson proudly offers. This is as opposed to older LCD TVs, which depended on cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) for their backlighting.

Finally, there’s the small matter of QLED technology...

If you’ve been eyeing up our 55” QLED Superfast Smart 4K HDR TV with Wi-Fi and Freeview T2 HD, you may also be curious to know what ‘QLED’ means for your viewing experience. Essentially, it represents the next step up from a standard LED TV, making the most of Quantum Dot material for brighter and more efficient illumination.
