Laser therapy for skin: How safe is it?

by Derma Circles Best Dermatology Centre

As the name suggests, Laser therapy uses focused light for various treatment and therapies. Laser stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Laser treatment is used for various medical and beauty treatments like treating early stages of cancers (cervical cancer, penile cancer, vaginal cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, basal cell skin cancer surgery), cauterizing and sealing to reduce post surgery symptoms (like sealing nerve endings or nerve endings to reduce pain and swelling).

Nowadays, the dermatologists have started to use laser therapy for various beauty and skin treatments like removing warts, moles, birthmarks, sun spots, tattoos and hair and reducing the signs of aging (wrinkles, blemishes and scars).

Though today laser therapy is being acknowledgment by the doctors for the above mentioned treatments, people are still hesitant to go through it because of the various misconceptions revolving around of it. Some of them include:

·         Laser causes cancer or other health problems (such as infertility)

Laser is a superficial procedure (i.e. the light affects only 1-4 mm of the skin. It is incapable to reach any vital parts of the body and thus do not affect any of the body part, especially not reproductive system. Sometimes, some patients experience itching or irritation in the treated area, but icing and cold milk compression can solve the problem easily.

·         Laser treatment is a painful process

Whether a patient experiences pain (or how much pain) depends on various factors. Most important one is his or her endurance. For example, some people don’t have a very reactive method to the treatment, whereas some feel a pinching pain in the treatment area. Moreover, the pain is a little intense at the sensitive area (bikini lines and underarms) and non-existent at the other parts.

·         Laser treatment causes thinning of skin

Laser treatment induces the formation of collagen and elastin which gives a new, rejuvenating effect on the skin as it replaces the old skin cells. This is why they seen to reduce wrinkles and other scars on the body. All in all, the collagen and elastin formation has a thickening effect on the skin which is quite contrary to the belief.

Concluding, laser therapy like all other treatments, is not free from a little complications. But they are what they claim to be; little. With the use of advanced machinery under the scrutiny of well trained and specialized doctors, there are rare to no cases where any serious problems arose due to the treatment.

Before the surgery, the dermatologist goes through a complete check-up to make sure the patient is healthy enough for the therapy. He or she guides the patients through the whole process by understanding their need and giving them a whole run down of the procedure they would carry to treat the same.
