Accommodation price in Malaysia
Budget hostels
If you travel alone, Malaysia is one of those countries where you can avoid shared dorms and give yourself the luxury of sleeping in single rooms thanks to its affordable prices.
The accommodation in hostels without looking for frills (a room with private bathroom) goes for an average price between 20 and 30 MYR in almost all the places where we were.
In Kuala Lumpur we stayed in the central, clean and functional Zen Rooms Grid 9 Hotel for MYR 40 the double room.
In Melaka we settled in a very simple room in the Jalan Jalan hotel that was not bad and well located for just 25 MYR.
In Tioman we opted for a simple cabin on the south coast of the island. We settled a couple of nights at the Nazri's Place 2 , basic features and shower outside. Nothing great but in a good location and it came out for barely 30 MYR a night.
At Cameron Highlands we wanted to spend a few days of trekking and relaxing and we raised the budget to settle in the Century Pines Hotel . With a spacious double room, clean and good service with lots of information about trekking in the area we raised the budget to MYR 300 per night.
In Georgetown , on the island of Penang we opted for a mid-range downtown hotel. We found the Bayview Hotel very close to the gastronomic eden of the city - the Red Garden - with a double room with good characteristics for MYR 200.
Upon our arrival in Kuala Lumpur we had booked a room at the Pullman KLCC Prince Hotel . For a price of 314 MYR we had a great double with all the usual services in a quality hotel like swimming pool, great breakfast buffet and spectacular views of the Petronas towers. Without a doubt, it was a wise decision to book a hotel of a certain level after the long plane trip to rest and gather strength for the trip that awaited us.
To stay in the Perenthian Islands it is necessary to book in advance. We did not do it but we were lucky with a last minute cancellation to get 5 nights at a price of 320 MYR each in the great Perenthian Island Resort on the island of Besar and its amazing beaches.
Note: Don't forget to check the Malaysia Visa requirements before visiting this heaven.
General price of public transport in Malaysia
The transport always usually the higher budget on the trip if you movéis enough and Malaysia surely going to do. In any case, like its Asian neighbors, it still has a totally acceptable price.
Calculate an average of about 7-10 MYR for each hour of travel .
Avoid hiring buses or minivans through agencies of the tourist street of Georgetown -Chulia- because normally the price will be more expensive than if you go to the transport agencies of the nearby shopping center (it is the most famous in the city). The same in Kuala Lumpur, buy the bus tickets directly from the station. You only have to go an hour before and you will almost always find a place.
In the cities you can take the local bus - in Georgetown there is a free one - for 1.40 MYR the minimum journey (the more expensive the farther you go). We did not try the taxis so I can not tell you.
Getting around by plane is very cheap if you hire it in advance. Air Asia and Firefly are the two main options.
Some examples of transport prices that we find traveling through Malaysia:
- From Georgetown to Cameron Highlands (5 hours): 36 MYR
- From Cameron to Kuala Lumpur (4 hours): 30 MYR
- From Kuala Lumpur to Mersing (5 hours): 30 MYR
- From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore (5 hours): 55 MYR
- From Kuala Lumpur to Penang: 40 MYR
- Boat from Mersing to Tioman (3 hours): 35 MYR
- From Melaka to Kuala Lumpur (3 hours): 18 MYR
- Subway rate in Kuala Lumpur: 2.30 MYR
- Bus from downtown Kuala Lumpur to the airport: 12 MYR
Prices of food
In Malaysia you will have a great time in any place, be it a quality restaurant or a small establishment. The usual plate of rice with chicken in Melaka will leave for about 5 MYR.
Eating at any booth in Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur does not exceed 10 or 15 MYR . A meal at a restaurant a bit more quality like the Old China in Kuala Lumpur ranges from 40 MYR.
You can find all kinds of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Thai or Indonesian food and the omnipresent western food, almost always of lower quality than the previous ones and always at higher prices. Something usual in Asian countries.
You can eat and dine decently for an average of about 15 MYR each time. A menu of tandoori chicken with its sauces and its Naan goes for 7-9 RM and a Biryani dish for 5-7 MYR. Chinese food is somewhat more expensive but in the street stalls you will find it at the same prices as the Indian one.
The bottle of liter and a half of water comes out for about 3 MYR.
The 600 ml beer goes from the 6 RM for the local to the 12 MYR for the import ones, reaching 20 RM in the pijas areas of the center of Kuala Lumpur.
Prices of tourist attractions
Then I leave some of the prices to the tickets of some of the main tourist attractions of Malaysia . The prices are not excessive.
Visit the Sultanate Palace: 2 MYR.
The Baba and Nyonya Perankan Museum in Melaka : 16 MYR.
The bird sanctuary in Kuala Lumpur: 67 MYR.
Visit to the Kuala Lumpur Tower: MYR 32.
Visit to the Petronas Towers : 85 MYR and muuucha patience ...
