Kerala - Will Inspire the Poet in Youby Manju Chandra Kerala Tourism
Kerala will inspire the poet in you. Kerala in itself can be termed visual poetry. It is like poetry begets poetry. Such are the immense blessings of nature to this coastal state. Kerala is situated in the Malabar Coast of southwestern India. This emerald piece of gem is nestled between Western Ghats and Arabian Sea.
With its scintillating beaches, lovely hill stations, placid backwaters, enchanting wildlife, breathtaking landscape and classical art forms, Kerala attracts millions to its lap.
The travel you have to and fro while on a Kerala tour in itself is a remarkable affair. You will be treated to predominantly verdant landscape interspersed with diverse geographical terrains by the two sides. You will be inebriated with the charming beauty.
Backwater is an inevitable part of Kerala tourism packages. No Kerala tour is considered complete without savoring backwaters. Backwater is a unique Kerala phenomenon. It is difficult to find a similar occurrence anywhere else in the world. Canals and inlets which are manmade and of natural origin combine with branches of over forty rivers and five lakes to form a complex network which is known as backwaters. Local people used it as transportation medium before bridges, roads and ferries came. They also depended on it for means of livelihood like agriculture and fishing. Backwaters is carrying on playing the economic role to perfection by being a money earner to Kerala economy through tourism. Backwaters make for exquisite setting with its shores adorned with monuments, swaying coconut trees, emerald flora and lush green paddy fields, fishing nets and various activities of life. Backwaters are embellished by water flowers especially water lilies. Cruises savoring this fascinating landscape are memorable. Alleppey, Kochi, Kollam and Kumarakom are the epicenters of backwater tourism.
Houseboats are now the superstars of backwater tourism. Houseboats are molded in the model of “Kettuvallams” of yester years. Kettuvallams were used to transport rice and other household items through backwaters. They came with thatched roof over wooden hulls to offer protection from elements of nature. Although the form is largely unaltered, Houseboats are two to three storied affairs with one to five bedrooms included. Apart from sleeping space, there is provision for dining space and a sit out open on all sides. From the sit out the fascinating backwaters can be savored. There are generators adjoined to houseboats providing for air conditioning. A crew including a cook accompanies guests. Menu is usually indigenous variety with local fish included. But in the end taste of guests prevail. Although Houseboats are motorized they are run in a meandering pace letting guests fully relish the surrounding landscape.
Spending a night in houseboat docked in backwaters is a memorable affair. You can ask to switch off electric lamps to spend time in the light of lanterns alone to get a local feel. You can glimpse houses and boats afar as static and mobile spots of illumination respectively. If you are in the good books of fortune you can witness fireflies adorning tree branches, blinking eternally. A marvelous sight indeed!
Kerala homes exotic flora and fauna. There are many wildlife and bird sanctuaries and National parks preserving and showcasing that treasure.
Apart from winding backwaters and enchanting wildlife, there are many virgin beaches and lovely hill stations included in Kerala tourism .
