Journey of the wheat exporters from the traditional flour production to modern roller mills

The process by which the cereal grains are grounded into flour is known as milling. If we peep into the traditional method of milling, we would find that initially the grinding of the grains was done between two stones. Of the two stones, the lower stove was known as the query stone. It is stationary while the upper stone is mobile in nature and is known as the handstone. This instrument of milling is the oldest known device which is used for grinding cereals and producing flour.

There is a special setting in the device which is known as the saddle stone. This stone holds the grain. The handstone basically owns a cylindrical shape of the stone. This stone is held by both the hands and is ground. When this stone hit against the stone containing the cereal, it crushed the grain and produced the flour. Generally, the flour produced by this method was coarse. In order to get smooth and fine flour, the grains were malted. This was how the traditional flour device worked. There are a number of wheat grains wholesales in Jabalpur who used these devices traditionally.

The working mechanism in modern mills

However, with modernisation in the field of producing flour, advanced millers came into existence. These devices worked with a similar mechanism as the modern day mills. It consisted of two large circular stones and a runner stone which rotated around a fixed centre creating a pressure on the underlying stone.

When the above runnerstone is rotated using a hand, the grains placed between these stones get ground. This hand-powered grinding machine required a lot of human labour and was quite a time taking. Apart from that, this device could process and produce only a little amount of flour which is enough for a single household.
With the growth in the yield and increment on the population, various flour mills opened up. It uses a definite machine for grinding the grains and producing the required flour. The modern mills use an electric motor for rotating the millstones. The grain is fed in the machine and after getting ground; it passes through the narrow groove and gets expelled.

Over time, several milling wheat suppliers and exporters in Madhya Pradesh and other parts of the country came up. They make use of roller mills. These mills have spinning rollers made up of metal. When grain passes through it, due to the rolling effect of it, the grains get crushed finely. This finely crushed grain gets sieved so that the coarse and fine flour gets separated. Majority of wheat exporters in Madhya Pradesh use these roller mills which run on electricity.
