Jageshwar- The Abode of Gods

Jageshwar is a well known Hindu pilgrimage site in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. The town is well known for its temples and attracts tourists from all parts of India. The earliest Jageshwar temples are believed to have been built in the 6th century during the Gupta period. Adiguru Shankaracharya is said to have visited the town and rebuilt and renovated many of its temples before leaving for Kedarnath. The Chand kings of Kumaon were great patrons of the Jageshwar Mahadev Temple. Jageshwar’s temples are known for the unique ‘nagara’ style of architecture. Away from the din of city life, this is the ideal place for those who are looking for a respite from their daily schedule. 

The best season to be here is during the summer when the climate is mild. The major festivals of Jageshwar are Maha Shivratri which is celebrated during spring (February- March) and Jageshwar Monsoon Festival which is celebrated in the month of August. The nearest airport is in Pantnagar which is 150 km from Jageshwar. Buses ply on a regular basis to the town from cities like Almora, Pitoragarh and Haldwani.
